Going on holiday and spending time with friends and family\u2014whether it’s a summer break or a Christmas getaway\u2014is a highlight in our calendars. But before you can enjoy it, you first have to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re travelling while using GLP-1 weight loss injections<\/a> like Mounjaro<\/strong><\/a> or Wegovy<\/strong><\/a>, there are a few logistical challenges to keep in mind beyond simply packing your bags. Potential travel sickness, storing your pens correctly, and travel restrictions and requirements can all play their part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last thing you want is medication getting damaged, lost or delayed during your trip. To help you plan for a smoother journey, and reduce some of the worry, this article answers some common questions on how to travel with GLP-1s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Store Your GLP-1s Correctly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your GLP-1 weight loss pen needs to be in the fridge before you start using it, which increases shelf life. But you don\u2019t need to keep it in there once you\u2019ve injected the first dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re using a Mounjaro <\/strong>KwikPen, keep it refrigerated<\/a> between 2\u00b0C and 8\u00b0C Celsius before the first dose. After using the first dose from a pen, you can keep Mounjaro unrefrigerated for up to 30 days at a temperature of under 30\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Wegovy, storage guidance can vary depending on the pen type. Before use, store your Wegovy pen in the fridge between 2\u00b0C and 8\u00b0C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wegovy 7.2mg single-use pen can be stored outside the fridge at temperatures not above 30\u00b0C<\/strong> for up to 28 days<\/strong>. It should be discarded if it has been exposed to light, exposed to temperatures above 30\u00b0C, or if it has been out of the fridge for more than 28 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Wegovy pens (0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, 2.4mg) can be kept out of the fridge (under 30\u00b0C<\/strong>) for up to 42 days<\/strong>. It should be discarded if it has been exposed to light, exposed to temperatures above 30\u00b0C, or if it has been out of the fridge for more than 42 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should store your Saxenda pens<\/strong><\/a> in the fridge as soon as you get them. Once you start using a pen, you can keep it for one month stored below 30\u00b0C. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can get portable coolers or insulated bags to keep your medication at a lower temperature while you travel. Be careful when buying one, though, as they need to be suitable for GLP-1 medication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the cap on and store it in the original packaging to protect the pens from light. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the liquid in your pen is frozen, cloudy or no longer clear, it is not safe to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pack Needles and a Sharps Bin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Remember to take your needles with you, as well as alcohol wipes if you use them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And don’t forget to take a sharps bin with you for your used needles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GLP-1s and Travel Sickness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Long journeys in planes, trains and cars are taxing at the best of times. Travel sickness can make them even more unpleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re using GLP-1 weight loss injections, you might feel like fatigue, dehydration or nausea is making your travel sickness worse. This may be due to the side effects of GLP-1s<\/a>, which you might get after you inject it and\/or after you increase your dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
