When you take it alongside a meal, it binds to the enzymes in your body which digest fat, preventing you from absorbing around \u2153 of it. This fat passes through your body and out into your stool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orlistat is a medication designed to help you lose weight. However, like many medications, Orlistat can have side effects; here, we will go through the most common ones, as well as ones which should be concerning and how you can deal with them if they do arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-before-you-take-orlistat\"><strong>Before You Take Orlistat<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before taking any new medication, you should speak with your GP, and read through the Patient Information Leaflet. This allows you to know the risks you may face before you start a course of medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This medicine must not be taken by children and adolescents under 18 years old.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not take orlistat if you;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are allergic to orlistat or any of the listed ingredients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are pregnant or breastfeeding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have cholestasis (a block in the flow of bile from the liver) or chronic malabsorption syndrome<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are currently taking warfarin (or other blood thinners) or ciclosporin&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talk to your doctor before using orlistat if you;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have diabetes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Currently have or have previously had problems with your kidneys &#8211; orlistat may be associated with kidney stones in cases of chronic kidney disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are taking or plan to take any other medications &#8211; orlistat can interfere with how much you are able to absorb.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The oral contraceptive pill may be less effective if you take orlistat and experience severe diarrhoea. Use an extra method of contraception while using orlistat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a multivitamin at bedtime when you are using orlistat every day. Orlistat can prevent you from absorbing some vitamins from your food; taking it at bedtime should allow it to fully digest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are taking any of the following medications;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Amiodarone (for heart rhythm problems)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acarbose (to treat type 2 diabetes)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Levothyroxine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medications for high blood pressure or high cholesterol<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medications to treat epilepsy, HIV, depression, psychiatric problems or anxiety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orlistat may reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E or K). If you already have a deficiency, or feel you may develop one, speak to your doctor about supplementation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-orlistat-common-side-effects\"><strong>Orlistat Common Side Effects<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with any medication, some patients will experience side effects when taking orlistat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a fat binder, orlistat prevents your body from absorbing around \u2153 of the fat in your diet. This fat is expelled in your faeces, which means the most common side effects are often gastrointestinal in nature. If you experience these effects, you can try eating less fat in your diet, though some patients may still experience these effects for as long as they use this medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 1 in 10 people may experience;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Flatulence, with or without oily spotting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatty, oily or soft stools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sudden bowel movements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up to 1 in 10 people may experience the following;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Abdominal pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More frequent bowel movements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Runny or liquid stools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faecal incontinence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If any of these effects become severe or troublesome, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-orlistat-serious-side-effects\"><strong>Orlistat Serious Side Effects<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These effects are less common than the above ones; it is not known how frequently they occur in patients. Some of these conditions are complex, with multiple possible symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Severe allergic reaction\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Breathing difficulties, sweating, rashes, itching, swelling of the face, rapid heart beat, fainting or collapse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you experience any of these effects, stop using this medication and seek urgent medical assistance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bleeding from the rectum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inflammation of the large intestine (diverticulitis)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Abdominal pain, particularly on the left side, fever, constipation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pancreatitis\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sudden severe abdominal pain (upper or general), fever, nausea, vomiting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bullous dermatitis (skin blistering)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Severe itching, usually large fluid-filled blisters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inflammation of the liver (hepatitis)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Yellowing of the skin and\/or eyes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dark coloured urine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of appetite<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Itching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stomach pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tenderness around the liver<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build up of calcium in the kidneys (oxalate nephropathy)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kidney stones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you experience any of these side effects, stop taking orlistat and seek urgent medical attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-orlistat-long-term-side-effects\"><strong>Orlistat Long Term Side Effects<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has been noted that orlistat may have some effects on blood tests while it is taken, which may last for a time after you stop taking it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increase in liver enzyme levels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Effects on blood clotting in people taking blood thinning medication (warfarin)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you go for a blood test, inform your doctor that you are taking orlistat, or if you have used it in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-reduce-the-risk-of-orlistat-side-effects\"><strong>How to Reduce the Risk of Orlistat Side Effects<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common side effects of orlistat come from the removal of fat from the food you eat. Such side effects in the first few weeks of treatment can be a sign that you haven\u2019t removed enough fat from your diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For best results, start your lower-fat diet a few days or a week before you start taking the medication. Find out how much fat your favourite foods contain, and work out the rough size of your usual portions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will help you establish a baseline for how much fat you are eating, and whether you may need to swap to a lower-fat alternative, preventing you from accidentally having too much fat in a single meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might find that fat-soluble vitamins (A, D,E and K) aren\u2019t absorbed as well while taking orlistat. You can help this by taking supplements, or eating foods that are high in these vitamins.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A diet rich in fruit and vegetables can help you to get more vitamins, as can a multivitamin supplement. Take your supplement at least 2 hours before you take orlistat, or at bedtime, to ensure you are absorbing enough of the vitamins. Do not take your supplement at the same time as Orlistat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In most people, your levels of these vitamins will remain within the normal range. Speak to your doctor before starting a new supplement regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orlistat is taken three times a day, with each main meal; it can be taken immediately before, during, or up to an hour after eating. Make sure to spread your allowed amount of fat across these three meals. \u201cSaving up\u201d fat will only make that meal have worse side effects than the others, rather than allowing you to bank up the effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you miss a meal while taking orlistat, or the meal contains no fat, do not take your dose of orlistat. Taking orlistat without any dietary fat may increase your chances of side effects without offering any benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many users find that the common side effects can be controlled by watching their diet and adjusting it as necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-long-can-you-stay-on-orlistat\"><strong>How Long Can You Stay on Orlistat?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orlistat should only be used for more than three months if you have lost at least 5% of your body weight while using it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A normal treatment course is around 3 months, after which a pharmacist will review your weight loss. If they decide to allow you to continue, the maximum length of treatment is around two years. Safety trials for taking orlistat for longer than 2 years have not been conducted, so most pharmacists will not prescribe after this length of treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happens-when-you-stop-taking-orlistat\"><strong>What Happens When You Stop Taking Orlistat?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stopping orlistat is relatively easy; just stop taking the pills with your meals. Some effects may last for a few days, as the medication leaves your system.
