Some people have reported menstrual cycle changes while losing weight. These changes can include irregular periods or a change in flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/weight-loss\/mounjaro\/\">Mounjaro<\/a> (tirzepatide) acts like two hormones that your body makes naturally:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This helps regulate blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce your appetite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Mounjaro affects hormones, you might wonder if this impacts other aspects of hormonal health, including the menstrual cycle. Or whether period changes are one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/health-advice\/weight-loss\/mounjaro\/mounjaro-side-effects\/\">Mounjaro side effects<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Mounjaro change your menstrual cycle?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Research has not confirmed that Mounjaro directly affects the menstrual cycle.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicines.org.uk\/emc\/files\/pil.15481.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" rel=\"dofollow\" >Mounjaro\u2019s patient information leaflet<\/a> does not list period changes as a side effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome users do report changes to their cycle,\u201d says Abdal Alvi, Simple Online Pharmacy\u2019s Chief Clinical Officer. \u201cBut the evidence is currently limited.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the US, patients and healthcare professionals can report suspected side effects to a national database. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovid.com\/jnls\/greenjournal\/abstract\/10.1097\/aog.0000000000006367~association-of-glucagon-like-peptide-1-receptor-agonists?redirectionsource=fulltextview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A 2026 study of these reports<\/a> found that, compared with other medicines, tirzepatide had a higher share of reports for two problems. These were bleeding between periods and clots in period blood. The study did not find the same pattern for heavy bleeding or missed periods. These reports cannot prove Mounjaro caused the changes or show how common they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mounjaro (tirzepatide) does affect hormones, and it helps your body respond better to insulin. Insulin also plays a part in how the ovaries work. So it is possible that these hormone changes could affect your menstrual cycle too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your cycle has changed on Mounjaro, your weight loss may be one reason. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3803\/EnM.2017.32.2.248\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3803\/EnM.2017.32.2.248\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Research has found weight and menstruation to be linked<\/a>. The NHS lists losing or gaining a lot of weight as a common cause of irregular cycles. Weight changes can affect your levels of oestrogen, a hormone that regulates the menstrual cycle.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthy weight loss may help regulate your periods. A review of 11 clinical trials showed <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12902-023-01500-5\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12902-023-01500-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GLP-1 weight loss treatment contributed to more regular periods in people with PCOS<\/a> carrying extra weight. PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome, which the NHS now calls polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Can Mounjaro Affect My Period? What to Know About Menstrual Changes on Tirzepatide\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ks-77kA4tkA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Mounjaro stop periods?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There\u2019s no evidence that Mounjaro stops periods, but<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/symptoms\/missed-or-late-periods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" rel=\"dofollow\" ><strong>rapid weight loss can<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your period has stopped, don\u2019t ignore it. Take a pregnancy test first, because pregnancy is one of the most common reasons a period stops. It could also be a sign your weight loss has been too quick, or that you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/health-advice\/weight-loss\/eat-too-little-mounjaro\/\">eating too little on Mounjaro<\/a>. Significant weight loss stresses the body. In response, <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcem\/article\/102\/5\/1413\/3077281?login=false\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcem\/article\/102\/5\/1413\/3077281?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">your body prioritises your essential functions over menstruation<\/a> and producing hormones like oestrogen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you&#8217;re eating enough and your weight settles, periods may take 6 to 12 months or longer to return. You can release an egg before your first period comes back, so pregnancy is still possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve missed three periods in a row, talk to your GP. Too much oestrogen can stop an egg from being released, which can make periods irregular. Carrying extra weight has also been linked to heavier periods, although the reasons are not fully clear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re living with overweight or obesity, losing weight may help rebalance these hormones. You might experience some of the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Regular cycles:<\/strong> A healthy body mass index (BMI) may bring your cycle closer to a regular pattern. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/symptoms\/irregular-periods\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/symptoms\/irregular-periods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" rel=\"dofollow\" >The NHS considers a gap of 21 to 35 days between periods to be regular<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lighter periods:<\/strong> Better hormone regulation through weight loss may reduce your flow, although the evidence is limited.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Less cramping:<\/strong> People with a higher BMI report more stomach cramps before their period. Whether losing weight eases cramps is less clear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improved PMS symptoms:<\/strong> Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can cause mood swings, irritability, low mood and anxiety. <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1089\/jwh.2010.2128\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1089\/jwh.2010.2128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">In a large US study<\/a>, each one-point rise in BMI was linked to a 3% higher risk of developing PMS. The study did not test whether losing weight eases symptoms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A healthier diet, regular exercise and better sleep habits may also help. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/healthy-living\/womens-health\/girls-and-young-women-puberty-to-around-25\/periods-and-menstrual-health\/premenstrual-syndrome-pms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" rel=\"dofollow\" >NHS inform suggests<\/a> gentle exercise, balanced eating and 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night to ease PMS symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your hair can also change while you lose weight on Mounjaro. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/health-advice\/weight-loss\/mounjaro\/mounjaro-hair-loss\/\">Mounjaro hair loss<\/a> affected about 1 in 20 people in the weight loss trials. Around 1 in 100 people taking a placebo, an inactive injection given for comparison, also lost hair. Most cases were mild, and people usually recovered without stopping treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monitoring menstrual changes on Mounjaro<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you\u2019re concerned about Mounjaro and period changes, try tracking your menstrual cycle.<\/strong> Tracking can help you understand how the medication might be affecting your body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Documenting the following details can provide insights for yourself, your GP and our prescribers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your cycle length (the first day of one period to the first day of the next)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your flow<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re bleeding between periods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any clots in your period blood, and roughly how big they are<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any symptoms, including cramping, mood changes, fatigue, bloating and headaches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The date of each Mounjaro injection and any dose increase<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us or your GP know about any changes that worry you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we always advise is that a person reports any changes to their cycle onto their healthcare professional,\u201d Abdal says. \u201cIf a person thinks that they might be pregnant\u2026[they should] reach out to us or our Patient Care team or their own GP.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re a patient with Simple, we\u2019re here for you throughout your weight loss journey. If you have any questions or concerns, get in touch with our Patient Care team on 0141 774 5023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Mounjaro make the contraceptive pill less effective?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mounjaro may make the contraceptive pill less effective.<\/strong> Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how much of the pill your body absorbs. The effect is strongest when you first start treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is the UK&#8217;s medicines regulator. If you take the pill while on Mounjaro, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/women-on-skinny-jabs-must-use-effective-contraception-mhra-urges-in-latest-guidance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" rel=\"dofollow\" >the MHRA advises also using a second method<\/a>, such as condoms. This matters most for four weeks after you start Mounjaro, and for four weeks after every dose increase, including the one that takes you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/health-advice\/weight-loss\/mounjaro\/mounjaro-dosage-maintenance\/\">your Mounjaro maintenance dose<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alternatively, you could switch to a non-oral method of contraception, such as the implant, the injection or a coil. Mounjaro affects how well the pill is absorbed from the gut, so methods that do not rely on absorption from the gut are not affected in the same way and do not need the extra cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sickness and diarrhoea can also stop the pill from working, and both are common side effects of Mounjaro. If you vomit within three hours of taking the combined pill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/contraception\/methods-of-contraception\/combined-pill\/sickness-or-diarrhoea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" rel=\"dofollow\" >the NHS advises taking another pill straight away<\/a>. Diarrhoea lasting more than 24 hours means using condoms until seven days after it stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What should you do if you might be pregnant?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Take a pregnancy test and contact us straight away if you think you might be pregnant.<\/strong> The MHRA advises stopping GLP-1 medicines such as Mounjaro as soon as possible if you get pregnant. Researchers do not yet have enough safety data to know whether these medicines could harm a baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12902-023-01500-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Data from 11 clinical trials<\/a> showed older GLP-1 medicines raised natural pregnancy rates in people with PCOS who were carrying extra weight. Mounjaro takes time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicines.org.uk\/emc\/product\/15481\/smpc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" rel=\"dofollow\" >leave your body<\/a>. If you&#8217;re planning a baby, talk to us about stopping Mounjaro at least a month before you start trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When should I see a doctor?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most period changes are not an emergency, but some symptoms need medical help quickly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Contact our clinical team if:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You take the pill and are starting Mounjaro or moving up a dose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not sure whether your contraception is still reliable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sickness or diarrhoea keeps coming back but is manageable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your cycle has changed, and you want to talk through your treatment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>See your GP or <a href=\"tel:111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">call NHS 111<\/a> if:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have missed three periods in a row and a pregnancy test is negative<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You bleed between periods or after sex<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your periods have started lasting longer than seven days, when they usually don&#8217;t<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your periods become much heavier, or you pass clots larger than a 10p coin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You get a positive pregnancy test: stop Mounjaro and tell us as well<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You might be pregnant and have pain low down on one side of your stomach, shoulder tip pain or unusual bleeding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have pain in the upper right of your stomach that lasts longer than 30 minutes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vomiting or diarrhoea stops you keeping fluids down for more than six hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"tel:999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Call 999<\/a> or go to A&amp;E if you notice any of the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Severe stomach pain that spreads to your back and does not go away: stop taking Mounjaro<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sudden, sharp and intense stomach pain with dizziness, fainting or feeling sick if you might be pregnant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signs of severe dehydration after repeated vomiting or diarrhoea<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever the cause, if you have thoughts of harming yourself, go to A&amp;E and ask for the CRISIS team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key takeaways<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Period changes aren&#8217;t a listed side effect of Mounjaro.<\/strong> Reports of bleeding between periods and clots in period blood were higher than expected for tirzepatide in a 2026 study.
