It helps you feel fuller, lowers appetite and can support steady weight loss when used with diet and activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But like any medicine, it isn\u2019t for everyone. Safety, health profile, Wegovy interactions with other medications and pregnancy plans may make it unsuitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So this guide explains who Wegovy is for, who should avoid it, and when to pause your treatment plan or stop. And why sharing your full medical history with a clinician is so important for your safety and for avoiding serious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/health-advice\/weight-loss\/wegovy\/wegovy-side-effects\/\">side effects of Wegovy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-wegovy-licensed-for\">Who is Wegovy Licensed For?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wegovy is licensed for adults with obesity (BMI of 30+) or who are overweight (BMI of 27-29.9) with at least one weight-related health problem. This might include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, type 2 diabetes or heart disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients from Black, Asian or other minority ethnic backgrounds can also access Wegovy if they have a BMI of at least 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK medicines regulator, the MHRA, has only licensed it for use in adult patients (aged 18 and above), alongside a healthy diet and exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-cannot-use-wegovy\">Who Cannot Use Wegovy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWegovy isn\u2019t suitable for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have a [personal or family] history of some thyroid cancers, who have pancreatitis or who might be on certain medications,\u201d explains <strong>Abdal Alvi, Chief Clinical Officer at Simple Online Pharmacy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following patients may have to seek alternatives to Wegovy for managing their weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-anyone-allergic-to-semaglutide\">Anyone Allergic to Semaglutide<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You shouldn\u2019t use Wegovy if you\u2019ve ever had an allergic reaction to semaglutide, the medication\u2019s active ingredient. Or if you&#8217;ve had a reaction to any ingredient in the injection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-patients-with-a-history-of-thyroid-cancer\">Patients With a History of Thyroid Cancer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you or a close family member has had a rare thyroid cancer, tell your clinician. Speak to a doctor if you\u2019ve had either medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). Or if you\u2019ve had a condition called multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/edm2.70038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Studies in rodents have found a link<\/a> between GLP-1 receptor activation and thyroid tumours. While it hasn\u2019t been found in humans, the link cannot be ruled out. So, as a precaution, clinicians do not recommend Wegovy if you have a history of these conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-anyone-with-a-history-of-pancreatitis\">Anyone With a History of Pancreatitis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wegovy is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. These medications work by slowing down the rate food leaves your stomach (called \u201cdelayed gastric emptying). That\u2019s why common side effects are stomach related (e.g. vomiting, constipation and diarrhoea).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some patients taking GLP-1 medicines have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/if-you-take-a-glp-1-medicine-and-have-been-hospitalised-by-acute-pancreatitis-the-yellow-card-biobank-wants-to-hear-from-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" rel=\"dofollow\" >reported acute pancreatitis on the treatment<\/a>. So, if you\u2019ve had pancreatitis before, you shouldn\u2019t use Wegovy as you\u2019re at an increased risk of developing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pancreatitis symptoms include sudden, sharp or burning pain in the upper abdomen. This often radiates to the back and pain may worsen after eating. You may feel this alongside persistent nausea (with or without vomiting).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fatty stools (pale, bulky, foul-smelling stools due to poor fat digestion)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Back pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you think you may have pancreatitis, seek urgent medical attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-people-on-some-medication-including-other-glp-1s\">People on Some Medication (Including Other GLP-1s)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There aren\u2019t any direct interactions between Wegovy and other drugs. However, it can affect the absorption of some medications. For example antibiotics, warfarin (blood thinners) or antipsychotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should not combine Wegovy with other GLP-1 medicines (Mounjaro, Saxenda or Ozempic). Using two incretin-based drugs together can raise side-effect risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients using insulin are not eligible for Wegovy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-patients-with-certain-health-conditions\">Patients with Certain Health Conditions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well as pancreatitis and thyroid cancer, Wegovy may not be recommended in patients with other conditions. For example, patients with any active cancer and\/or patients having chemotherapy or radiotherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not recommended for those with severe damage to the kidneys or liver, severe heart failure or unstable diabetic retinopathy (an eye condition caused by diabetes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your prescriber will weigh the risks and benefits if any of these apply to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pregnant-or-breastfeeding-patients\">Pregnant or Breastfeeding Patients<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should not use Wegovy (or other GLP-1 weight loss drugs) while pregnant or breastfeeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK\u2019s medicines regulator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/women-on-skinny-jabs-must-use-effective-contraception-mhra-urges-in-latest-guidance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noreferrer noopener\">(MHRA) advises women to use effective contraception<\/a> while on medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are planning a pregnancy, stop Wegovy for at least two months before trying. This will ensure the medication is completely out of our system. If you become pregnant while taking Wegovy, speak to your prescriber and GP for advice on what to do next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wegovy-and-pregnancy-why-is-the-medication-unsuitable\">Wegovy and Pregnancy: Why is the Medication Unsuitable?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wegovy is unsuitable during pregnancy because there isn\u2019t enough information on whether it could cause the baby harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breastfeeding is also not recommended while on Wegovy because a risk to the baby can\u2019t be ruled out. Again, if you could become pregnant, use effective contraception while using Wegovy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-you-take-wegovy-with-no-gallbladder\">Can You Take Wegovy with No Gallbladder?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having no gallbladder (after a cholecystectomy) is not a formal contraindication to Wegovy. Many people without a gallbladder can still use GLP-1 medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, some studies have found a link between GLP-1 treatments and a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35344001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">higher risk of gallbladder or biliary problems<\/a> (like gallstones and inflammation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rapid weight loss can also raise gallstone risk. If you\u2019ve had gallbladder disease before, or you get right-upper tummy pain, fever or yellowing of the skin\/eyes, get checked quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Practical takeaways if you don\u2019t have a gallbladder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u2019s not an automatic no, but you should discuss your history with your clinician.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch for biliary symptoms (stones can form in bile ducts even after gallbladder removal).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report new stomach pain, persistent nausea\/vomiting, fever or jaundice urgently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep hydrated and follow the dose-increase plan slowly to limit stomach side effects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-to-stop-or-pause-wegovy\">When to Stop or Pause Wegovy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stop and get medical advice if any of the following happen, as it might suggest Wegovy is not suitable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you are or you\u2019re planning to conceive soon, stop and speak to your clinician.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have symptoms that suggest acute pancreatitis. E.g. sudden severe upper abdominal pain, often radiating to the back, with persistent nausea with or without vomiting). Don\u2019t restart if it\u2019s confirmed pancreatitis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signs of gallbladder or biliary problems (right-upper tummy pain, fever, jaundice).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severe dehydration from ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea. This can affect your kidneys. You may need fluids and a dose review.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A serious allergic reaction (swelling of face\/lips\/tongue, trouble breathing, widespread rash). If this happens, seek urgent medical attention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-you-need-to-tell-a-provider-your-medical-history\">Why You Need to Tell a Provider Your Medical History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wegovy can interact with your health in several ways. Patients with some conditions, or who take some medications, need extra care. For example, if you\u2019re using diabetes medication, have kidney problems, or are taking blood thinners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So it\u2019s important you tell your provider your medical history. If you\u2019re buying weight loss injections online, fill out your assessment honestly. Don\u2019t leave out any relevant information. This can reduce the risk of experiencing potential side effects that are more serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe key thing here is that patients should try to obtain the medications from regulated providers,\u201d Abdal says. \u201cBeing injectable, prescription-only medications, patients need to take where they&#8217;re obtaining them from very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you go to a provider and they don&#8217;t have an assessment, or they don&#8217;t have a regulated healthcare professional, patients should be suspicious of that,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-takeaways\">Key Takeaways<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Who Wegovy Is For<\/strong>: Adults with BMI 30+, (or 27+ for patients with a weight-related condition or BAME background).
