If the pen is kept in the wrong conditions, it may be less effective. It may even be unsafe to use for your weekly Understanding Wegovy Variants<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wegovy is a prescription-only weight loss medication for adults with obesity or who are overweight (with at least one weight-related comorbidity). Currently, there are two variants of Wegovy to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/online-doctor\/weight-loss\/wegovy\">Wegovy pens<\/a> are pre-filled injection pens. These pens use a liquid formulation that is injected once per week. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/weight-loss\/wegovy-pill\/\">Wegovy pills<\/a> are a new formulation, taken as a daily tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both of these medications have different storage requirements, despite using the same active ingredient (semaglutide). While there are some similarities, the storage requirements for each variant are not interchangeable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Wegovy pens, storage guidance may vary depending on the type of Wegovy pen you have. The Wegovy 7.2mg single-use pen should be stored in the fridge between <strong>2\u00b0C and 8\u00b0C<\/strong> before use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During use, it can be stored outside the fridge at temperatures <strong>not above 30\u00b0C<\/strong> for up to <strong>42 days<\/strong> (for 0.25, 0.5, 1. 1.7 and 2.4mg pens) or <strong>28 days<\/strong> (for 7.2mg HD pens). The pen should be discarded if it has been exposed to light, exposed to temperatures above 30\u00b0C, or if it has been out of the fridge for more than 42\/28 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-wegovy-injection-storage-guide\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wegovy Injection Storage Guide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Wegovy pens, the liquid is designed to be kept cool. If exposed to higher temperatures (over 30\u00b0C), the medication will become denatured. This means that the shape of the molecules that make up the medication will change, which means they cannot perform their original function. If Wegovy has become denatured, it should not be used, as it may not work properly and could make you feel unwell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, keeping the medication too cold (under 2\u00b0C) may lead to the medication freezing, which can cause the medication to crystallize, degrade and break apart. <strong>Do not use Wegovy if it has been frozen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where possible, we recommend storing your Wegovy pens in the fridge between uses, reducing the risk of temperature spikes. This will help to keep the medication stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some Wegovy pens may have specific room-temperature transport guidance. However, storage guidance can vary depending on the pen type. The Wegovy 7.2mg single-use pen should be discarded if it has been exposed to light, temperatures above 30\u00b0C, or if it has been out of the fridge for more than 28 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never freeze your Wegovy pen, as this can damage the medication. Do not use a pen if it has been frozen &#8211; even if thawed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep the cap on the pen to prevent exposure to light, as this can degrade the medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-temperature-control-and-effectiveness\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Temperature control and effectiveness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-can-you-leave-wegovy-out-of-the-fridge-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you leave Wegovy out of the fridge?&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yes, once in use Wegovy can be stored at room temperature (below 30\u00b0C).<\/strong> However, once you receive your medication, store it in the body of the fridge prior to first use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-how-long-can-wegovy-stay-out-of-the-fridge-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long can Wegovy stay out of the fridge?&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Up to 48 hours during delivery and up to 6 weeks from first use<\/strong> as long as it is kept below (below 30\u00b0C). Wegovy HD 7.2mg pens can be kept out of the fridge for up to <strong>4 weeks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-does-wegovy-work-better-if-kept-in-the-fridge-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does Wegovy work better if kept in the fridge?&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No. The medication will be equally effective in either storage condition, provided the pen has been stored correctly.<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>If your Wegovy pen is stored in the fridge before first use, it can be used until the expiry date printed on the box. If kept at room temperature, or once in use, it must be used within 6 weeks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-does-wegovy-injection-sting-whe-n-used-straight-from-the-fridge\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Does Wegovy injection sting whe<\/strong>n used straight from the fridge?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some patients have reported that room temperature injections \u201csting\u201d less than cold ones, though this is up to personal preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you choose to remove your Wegovy pen from the fridge before administering, do not force de-chilling of the pen. Simply leave at room temperature between 15 to 30 minutes prior to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-what-happens-if-i-let-my-wegovy-medication-get-too-hot\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens if I let my Wegovy medication get too hot?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wegovy that has been exposed to higher temperatures (over 30\u00b0C) may become denatured (broken down), rendering it not fit for use. Making it far less effective ,and increasing the risk of side effects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-how-do-i-know-if-i-should-not-use-my-wegovy-pen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I know if I should not use my Wegovy pen?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your Wegovy pen cannot be used if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The liquid is cloudy, no longer colourless, or contains any particles.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has been exposed to heats above 30\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has been frozen, even if it has since thawed out and looks clear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have any doubts or concerns please contact us for advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-why-the-6-week-rule\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the 6-week rule?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once in use, a Wegovy pen can be stored at room temperature for six weeks (4 weeks for 7.2mg). Even at room temperature, semaglutide can degrade over time. Beyond this time, the pen will be less effective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the seal on the pen has been broken, there is a risk of bacterial contamination, which increases past the six week mark. This risk still applies even if Wegovy is kept in the fridge during use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This limit has been based on stability testing, which shows that semaglutide kept its efficacy and sterility within this window. After six weeks, both dropped, becoming less effective and increasing the chances of contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the four\/six weeks are up, you must discard your pen. Even if doses remain in the pen, the additional risks and degradation of the medication mean that these pens should not be used after this deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-checking-the-your-pen-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Checking the your pen&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-how-can-i-tell-if-wegovy-has-gone-bad-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I tell if Wegovy has gone bad?&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before each injection, visually check your pen by holding it up to the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not use your pen if the liquid:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Has changed colour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has become cloudy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contains particles or small ice crystals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These all indicate contamination of the liquid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Track your pen&#8217;s usage<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you first use a new pen, write the date it was opened on the box provided in your Wegovy packaging. This helps you track how long the pen has been in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do not use your pen if:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It has been stored incorrectly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has been exposed to heat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It shows any visual changes to the liquid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has been open for more than 6 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The pen itself is cracked or damaged<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If any of these apply, contact us for advice on next steps. Broken pens can cause injury or lead to further contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you are unsure or have any doubts about the safety of your pen, do not use it and contact us to advise on the next steps.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-travelling-with-wegovy-flexitouch-pen-injections-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travelling with Wegovy FlexiTouch pen (injections)&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-travelling-on-a-plane-with-wegovy-pen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travelling on a plane with Wegovy Pen<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"h-travelling-on-a-plane-with-wegovy-pen-do-not-put-your-wegovy-pen-in-checked-baggage-the-extreme-temperatures-in-a-plane-s-cargo-hold-can-freeze-or-overheat-your-medication-keep-your-pens-in-your-carry-on-bag-or-hand-luggage\"><strong>Do not put your Wegovy pen in checked baggage<\/strong>. The extreme temperatures in a plane\u2019s cargo hold can freeze or overheat your medication. <strong>Keep your pens in your carry-on bag or hand luggage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may require a prescription at airport security. For this get in touch and we will email a PDF of your prescription &#8211; that you can print out and take with you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For shorter flights, a cool bag may not be required. For flights over 6 hours, we recommend an insulated travel case to keep your medication cool. If using ice packs, ensure they are not directly touching the medication, and take care to avoid freezing the liquid in your pens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep your medication in the original packaging, with the prescription label visible. You will need to declare your medication at airport checkpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For extended travel, make sure to keep track of your storage limits (6 weeks at room temperature from first use).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-can-i-skip-a-week-of-wegovy-for-holidays\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I skip a week of Wegovy for holidays?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/health-advice\/weight-loss\/wegovy\/wegovy-dosage-maintenance\/\">Skipping a dose is not recommended<\/a> without medical advice. This can lead to lowered effectiveness, increased risk of side effects and can make it harder to get back into the routine of using the medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wegovy pens are travel-friendly, meaning you should not need to skip a dose. If you must, speak to your prescriber before you do so for advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-injection-timing-and-storage-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Injection timing and storage&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is the best time of day to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/health-advice\/weight-loss\/wegovy\/wegovy-injection-sites\/\">inject Wegovy<\/a>? Any time of day is suitable, so long as you consistently use the same time each week. Most choose the morning or evening for their injection, based on their routine. This ensures your body can absorb the active ingredient properly. If the pill is crushed or damaged, the amount of SNAC in the pill can be altered, which means your body won\u2019t absorb the right amount of semaglutide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-storage-requirements-for-wegovy-pills\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Storage requirements for Wegovy pills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-do-you-need-to-put-wegovy-pills-in-the-fridge\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you need to put Wegovy Pills in the fridge? <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No &#8211; never refrigerate Wegovy pills<\/strong>. This can damage the absorption enhancer, making them far less effective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Store at room temperature in the original bottle, away from any sources of moisture. Your bottle may have a desiccant packet included &#8211; please keep it in the bottle to stop the pills from getting moist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/diabetesservice\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2022\/07\/Oral-Semaglutide-Rybelsus-Patient-Information-Leaflet.pdf\">The patient information for Rybelsus<\/a> (which uses the same formulation) has more info about how to best store oral semaglutide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-why-pill-storage-differs-from-injections-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why pill storage differs from injections&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While both medications contain semaglutide, their delivery systems make them quite different. Liquid semaglutide (injection)&nbsp; requires refrigeration to maintain stability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wegovy tablets are more stable at room temperature, but the SNAC absorption enhancer is extremely moisture-sensitive. Humid conditions can make SNAC break down, which means your body will not be able to absorb the same amount of medication, leading to the tablets being much less effective. This includes refrigeration, which creates condensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-checking-pill-quality-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Checking pill quality&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before taking your dose, inspect your Wegovy pills carefully.
