You have done the hard part. The numbers on the scale are shifting. Your clothes fit differently. For the first time in a while, you actually feel like yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But somewhere between the relief and the progress, a worry grows that this could reverse if you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concern is valid. What happens when you stop Wegovy pills<\/a> likely mirrors what we have seen with the injections. Evidence points in one direction: most people do regain some weight after stopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you stop taking Wegovy pills suddenly?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes, you can. Wegovy (semaglutide) tablets do not cause withdrawal symptoms, and you can stop the medication without tapering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But once the medication clears your system, things change. Appetite comes back. Food starts calling again. That easy fullness you had on the medication? Gone. Every meal, every snack, every decision around food takes more effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens to your weight after stopping?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The STEP 1 extension study<\/a> tracked 327 people after they came off semaglutide 2.4 mg injections. The results were stark. Within a year, roughly two-thirds of the lost weight had returned. The 17.3% drop in body weight? It shrank to 5.6%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not a one-off finding. In 2026, the British Medical Journal (BMJ)<\/a> reviewed 37 studies of over 9000 people on different GLP-1 medications. Weight came back at around 0.4 kg per month after stopping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For people on newer treatments like semaglutide injections, it was closer to 0.8kg per month. Weight regain after stopping oral semaglutide is likely to follow the same pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A trial called STEP 5<\/a> showed the opposite. Patients who stayed on semaglutide for two years kept the weight off. The difference is clear. When stopping Wegovy pills, weight regain is to be expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why does weight come back?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obesity is not something that goes away. It is a long-term condition. Both the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organisation classify it this way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wegovy, made by Novo Nordisk, is part of a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medicines reduce appetite and slow digestion. They also make food feel less rewarding, which is why eating feels so different on treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stopping semaglutide reverses all three effects. Appetite often hits harder than people expect after stopping. The medication dials hunger down, but it does not rewire your appetite. Those signals are still running underneath. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a bit like blood pressure medication. Nobody expects their readings to stay low once they stop taking the tablets. The same applies to Wegovy pill discontinuation. The treatment manages the condition. It was never going to cure it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weight can start coming back within weeks of stopping. In the STEP 1 extension study, most of the regain happened within the first year. According to the BMJ, people could be back at their starting weight within 1.5 to 2 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That timeline is not the same for everyone. Research shows that people starting at a higher BMI, or without consistent eating routines, tend to regain weight after stopping more quickly. Building habits around meals and exercise, including strength training, makes a real difference.  Your Wegovy weight loss results are worth protecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NICE two-year limit: what does it mean for you?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the NHS, the current NICE guidance<\/a> limits injectable Wegovy treatment to two years. You receive it through a specialist weight management programme, working alongside a team that covers diet, activity and medication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is worth knowing that this two-year cap is a funding decision. It is not based on clinical evidence that two years is the right amount of time. For some patients, two years is not long enough for their weight to settle at a lower level without the medication’s help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Private prescriptions are not subject to this limit.  Whether to continue is something we decide together. It depends on how you are responding and what makes sense for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planning for the long term<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Weight regain after stopping is common, but it is not guaranteed. Whether you stop by choice or because your NHS funding has reached the two-year limit, how you prepare makes the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stopping taking weight loss medication does not mean losing everything you have worked for. But Wegovy pill weight maintenance long term requires real preparation, not just good intentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
