In other words, constipation was about twice as likely with the Wegovy pill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Constipation was one of the most common gut-related side effects in the trial, after nausea and vomiting. These kinds of side effects are often most noticeable when you first start treatment and when your dose is increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because nausea tends to get the most attention and is widely discussed before starting treatment, constipation can sometimes catch people off guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-does-the-wegovy-pill-cause-constipation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does the Wegovy pill cause constipation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Wegovy pill can cause constipation because semaglutide slows down digestion. <\/strong>Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy (both the injection and the tablet). It belongs to a group of medicines called GLP\u20111 receptor agonists, which mimic a natural gut hormone (GLP\u20111) your body releases when you eat to help you feel full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Wegovy pill activates GLP\u20111 receptors in your body and slows digestion. This helps you feel fuller sooner and stay fuller for longer, which can support weight loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, that slowing can also make constipation more likely. Here\u2019s what happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wegovy slows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicines.org.uk\/emc\/product\/102347\/smpc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" rel=\"dofollow\" >how quickly your stomach empties<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This results in waste moving through your bowel more slowly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The longer it sits there, the more water your bowel draws out of it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This can make stools harder and drier, and therefore harder to pass.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Constipation can also be more likely as you may be eating and drinking less while on treatment, as both can reduce stool bulk and contribute to dehydration. Each step up in dose increases that effect, so constipation can become more noticeable for a while. But not everyone who is taking the higher doses of the Wegovy pill becomes constipated. Experiencing this symptom does not mean the medicine has stopped working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-wegovy-pill-constipation-how-long-does-it-last-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wegovy pill constipation: how long does it last?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Constipation can sometimes persist for longer than other digestive side effects of the Wegovy pill. <\/strong>In the OASIS 4 trial, nausea and vomiting were described as transient but not constipation. If constipation lasts longer, it doesn\u2019t necessarily mean your body hasn\u2019t adjusted to the medication \u2014 different side effects can take different amounts of time to settle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many people, constipation becomes easier to manage once they get into a routine with their food and fluids. Increasing fibre and fluid intake, alongside regular movement, often helps. For others, constipation can continue longer term, but it\u2019s usually manageable with the same simple steps outlined below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-to-manage-constipation-on-the-wegovy-pill\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to manage constipation on the Wegovy pill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Managing constipation on the Wegovy pill starts with fibre, fluids, and movement \u2014 used together. <\/strong>The order matters: increase fibre gradually and increase your fluid intake at the same time, because adding more fibre without enough water can make stools harder, not softer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same everyday changes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/constipation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" rel=\"dofollow\" >the NHS recommends for constipation<\/a> work just as well on the Wegovy pill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Step to take<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>How it helps<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Increase fibre in your meals gradually over several days, through beans, oats, vegetables, and wholegrains<\/td><td>Adds bulk so stools pass more easily, and a slow build-up avoids bloating<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Eat fruits that contain sorbitol, such as apples, apricots, grapes, raisins, raspberries, and strawberries<\/td><td>Sorbitol pulls water into the bowel, working as a gentle natural laxative to soften stools<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Drinking plenty of water across the day<\/td><td>Softens stools and keeps them moving, and gives the extra fibre the fluid it needs to work<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Keep up regular physical activity, even a daily walk<\/td><td>Helps the bowel stay active, so stools do not sit and harden<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Ease off processed, low-fibre foods<\/td><td>Removes the foods that slow the bowel down<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Keep a regular, unhurried toilet routine, and go as soon as you feel the urge<\/td><td>Lets the bowel empty fully and stops stools building up<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staying ahead pays off, since preventing constipation is easier than clearing it later. Symptoms often return for a short spell each time you move up a step on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/health-advice\/weight-loss\/wegovy-pill\/wegovy-pill-dosage-guide\/\">Wegovy pill dosage schedule<\/a>. It can help to be extra consistent with these habits when you first start Wegovy and each time your dose increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hydration can take a little planning while you\u2019re taking the Wegovy pill. You take it with only a small sip of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else. After that 30 minute wait, you can focus on drinking regularly through the rest of the day to top up your fluid intake and stay hydrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your symptoms don&#8217;t resolve naturally after a few days of eating more fibre and drinking more water, speak to a pharmacist. They can point you to the right laxative. Bulk-forming ones, like psyllium husk, add a bit more fibre to soften your stools making them easier to pass.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Osmotic laxatives, like lactulose, work differently. They draw water into your bowel so stools stay soft and move along more easily. Both take two to three days to work and need plenty of fluids alongside.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stimulant laxatives are best kept for occasional use, on a pharmacist&#8217;s or prescriber&#8217;s advice. These include senna and bisacodyl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Constipation rarely comes alone. You might also notice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/health-advice\/weight-loss\/wegovy-pill\/wegovy-pill-heartburn\/\">other digestive side effects of the Wegovy pill<\/a>, like heartburn or bloating. These usually ease with the same smaller meals, steady fibre, and regular fluids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-when-should-i-see-a-doctor\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">When should I see a doctor?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most constipation on the Wegovy pill is manageable at home, but some symptoms need medical help.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speak to our clinical team if constipation is not improving with diet and fluid changes. Get in touch sooner if things are clearly getting worse. Seek advice in the same way for mold stomach pain or bloating that will not settle. See a GP urgently if you notice blood in your stool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stop the Wegovy pill and call 999 or go to A&amp;E if you notice signs of a blocked bowel. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>being sick repeatedly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>severe stomach cramping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a swollen and hard stomach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>being unable to pass gas or stool.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A blocked bowel is rare, but it needs emergency care straight away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-frequently-asked-questions-about-the-wegovy-pill-and-constipation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frequently asked questions about the Wegovy pill and constipation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Does the Wegovy pill cause constipation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. The Wegovy pill does cause constipation for some people, about one in five in trials.
