BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated by dividing your weight (KG) by your height (m) squared. Values between 25-29.9 are categorised as overweight, while values above 30 are categorised as obese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can work out your BMI yourself, or use a BMI calculator like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/healthy-weight\/bmi-calculator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" rel=\"dofollow\" >this one<\/a>\u00a0from the NHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-orlistat-work\">How Does Orlistat Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orlistat is categorised as a lipase inhibitor. Orlistat works by blocking the actions of the enzyme lipase, which normally breaks down fats in the food you eat so they can be digested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orlistat blocks this breakdown, and thus prevents around 1\u20443 of dietary fat you consume from being digested. By blocking fat digestion, it also reduces the number of calories absorbed by the body. The undigested fats pass out from your body in your stools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-take-orlistat\">How to Take Orlistat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orlistat capsule is an oral medication. Its recommended dosage is 120mg, taken three times a day with fat-containing meals. If you miss a meal, eat one with no fat or containing more than 15g of fat, you should not take the medication as it can lead to some unpleasant side effects for your digestive system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common side effects of orlistat are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain in your stomach area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diarrhoea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oily stools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty controlling bowel movements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of these side effects may be reduced by reducing your fat intake. However, you do need some fat in your diet for orlistat to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-makes-orlistat-effective\">What Makes Orlistat Effective?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orlistat is the most effective when it is coupled with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Orlistat will not have major effects on the body when it is taken alone. By eating a low fat diet and reducing calorie intake, along with regular exercise, you will start to notice weight loss effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people on orlistat will take it for around 3 months. However, if there is not a reduction of 5% of your body weight during those 3 months, the treatment time frame can be extended. A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9626916\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6-month dose-ranging study group<\/a> found that orlistat reduced the weight of patients taking 120 mg three times a day for 6 months by 39% (alongside a low calorie diet).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-long-can-i-take-orlistat\">How Long Can I Take Orlistat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orlistat is designed to be used to help you reach a healthy weight; the idea being that once you have reached this weight, you will stop using this medication. This means it should only be taken for 6 months at the longest. If you still require a weight loss treatment after 6 months, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for more options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alternative-treatments\">Alternative Treatments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some patients may find they experience side effects when using orlistat, as listed above. In these cases, we do supply alternative weight loss treatments. Alli and Xenical are both branded versions of orlistat, containing the same active ingredient.
