It&rsquo;s generally nothing to worry about and might clear up on its own, but if it&rsquo;s left untreated it could lead to a kidney infection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the symptoms?<\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>A painful, burning or stinging sensation while peeing<\/li>\n\t<li>Feeling an urgent need to urinate&nbsp;<\/li>\n\t<li>Peeing more often<\/li>\n\t<li>Dark, cloudy or strong-smelling urine&nbsp;<\/li>\n\t<li>Pain in the lower abdomen&nbsp;<\/li>\n\t<li>Feeling unwell&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treating cystitis&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cystitis can sometimes clear up on its own in mild cases, but generally you&rsquo;ll need a course of antibiotics such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/treatment\/trimethoprim\/\">Trimethoprim<\/a>. These are available on prescription from your GP or through an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/treatment\/trimethoprim\/\">online consultation<\/a>. <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/online-doctor\/cystitis\/trimethoprim\/\"   title=\"Trimethoprim\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"237\">Trimethoprim<\/a> will usually start to have an effect after 2 days of taking it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to take it<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trimethoprim should be taken twice a day, usually for three days. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and you can take them with or without food. It&rsquo;s important to keep taking them for the entire course as prescribed otherwise the infection could come back. For pregnant women and men, the antibiotic treatment will last for 14 days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are there side effects?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trimethoprim can cause side effects, like all medicines. These include:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>Itching<\/li>\n\t<li>Mild rash<\/li>\n\t<li>Nausea<\/li>\n\t<li>Diarrhoea&nbsp;<\/li>\n\t<li>Headaches&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staying hydrated and taking the tablets with meals can help to reduce symptoms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I take Trimethoprim?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trimethoprim isn&rsquo;t suitable for everyone and might have harmful effects for the following groups:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>Pregnant women<\/li>\n\t<li>Those with liver or kidney problems<\/li>\n\t<li>Anyone who has previously had an allergic reaction to antibiotics&nbsp;<\/li>\n\t<li>If you have anaemia&nbsp;<\/li>\n\t<li>If you have low folate in your blood<\/li>\n\t<li>Those with porphyria&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are some other medications which can interfere with Trimethoprim:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>Rifampicin&nbsp;<\/li>\n\t<li>Blood thinners<\/li>\n\t<li>Diabetes treatments<\/li>\n\t<li>Epilepsy medicine<\/li>\n\t<li>Digoxin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If any of the above applies to you, tell your GP or pharmacist so that they can prescribe you with a suitable alternative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I prevent cystitis?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you regularly get <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simpleonlinepharmacy.co.uk\/online-doctor\/cystitis\/\"   title=\"cystitis\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"231\">cystitis<\/a>, you can ask for a repeat prescription without needing to get a GP appointment.
