What is Buccastem?

Buccastem is used to treat nausea and vomiting associated with a migraine. Many people experience nausea and vomiting when suffering from a migraine and Buccastem can be an effective treatment for this. It can be taken by adults aged 18 years and over. It can be bought over the counter at a pharmacy after a discussion with a pharmacist.

The active ingredient in Buccastem 3mg is prochlorperazine 3mg. The tablets are buccal tablets, which means they are placed between the upper lip and gum and left to dissolve.

How does it work?

The active ingredient, prochlorperazine, is a type of medicine called a phenothiazine. They’re thought to work by blocking chemical messengers reaching the ‘vomiting centre’ of the brain. By blocking these messages, it stops the vomiting centre from triggering the sensation of nausea or causing vomiting.

Buccastem alternatives

There are other medicines available over the counter to treat migraine but many of these treat the other symptoms of migraine. Buccastem specifically treats nausea and vomiting associated with migraines.

Another medicine that can help with nausea and vomiting associated with migraines is Migraleve Pink tablets. Migraleve Pink contains 3 active ingredients: paracetamol, codeine and buclizine. Buclizine is an antiemetic medicine, which means it helps to treat nausea and vomiting.

We also offer prochlorperazine 5mg and metoclopramide 10mg tablets via our online doctor service.
