What is Canesten Cream 1%?

Canesten cream 1% is an anti-fungal cream. The active ingredient is clotrimazole 1%, which is an antifungal medicine. It is an effective treatment for various skin infections caused by a fungus. 

Examples of conditions clotrimazole can treat include:

• Ringworm (including jock itch)
• Fungal sweat rash
• Fungal nappy rash
• Athlete’s foot
• Thrush (Canesten Thrush Cream is also available)

Canesten clotrimazole cream treats these infections by killing the fungus (yeast) that causes these skin infections. It does this by damaging the cell membranes of the fungus, which kills the fungus and clears up the infection.

By treating fungal infections, Canesten cream improves the appearance of the affected areas and treats associated external symptoms such as itching and swelling.

Other Canesten products include internal creams, pessaries (for vaginal thrush), and a thrush cream.

Using Canesten Cream

Canesten cream should be applied thinly to the affected areas of the skin two or three times daily. A minimum treatment period of two weeks is recommended when treating fungal infections such as ringworm. Sometimes fungal infections improve but then return. To prevent this from happening, you should continue to use the cream for a few days after the skin has cleared.

If you are using this cream for athlete’s foot, make sure to wash and dry your feet (between the toes especially) before applying the cream. You should always wash your hands before and after applying the cream.

What is Canesten cream used for?

Canesten is an antifungal cream containing clotrimazole. It can be used to treat a number of fungal skin infections such as thrush, ringworm, nappy rash, and athlete’s foot.

Does Canesten cream stop itching?

Often, fungal skin infections can be itchy. By treating the fungal infection, Canesten cream can help relieve itching.

Where can you put Canesten cream?

Canesten cream 1% is for external use only. Avoid applying the cream near your eyes, lips, or mouth.

Is clotrimazole cream the same as Canesten?

Canesten is a brand of clotrimazole cream. There are non-branded versions of clotrimazole creams available and they will contain the exact same active ingredient. However, the strengths of creams may differ.

How long does Canesten 1% cream take to work?

Symptoms of fungal infection can improve within a few days of using Canesten cream. It might take longer for the infection to be treated completely. Even if your symptoms have gone, you should still use it for 2 weeks to stop the infection returning. If your symptoms do not improve after using the cream for 7 days, speak to your doctor.

How do you apply Canesten cream?

The cream should be applied thinly to the skin two or three times a day.

As with any medicine, Canesten cream can cause side effects. It may cause skin side effects such as blisters, irritation, and a burning or stinging sensation. 

On rare occasions, Canesten cream may cause allergic reactions. Signs of an allergic reaction include breathing difficulty, swelling of the face, and a rash. If you notice signs of an allergic reaction after using Canesten cream, seek medical attention immediately.

A strip of cream (around 0.5cm long) is enough to treat an area of skin the size of a hand.

If you are allergic to clotrimazole or any of the ingredients in this cream, you should not use it. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding you must speak to your doctor or midwife before using Canesten cream. 

Canesten cream should not be used in the treatment of scalp infections or fungal nail infections. Canespro fungal nail treatment is available from our shop.

Canesten cream may damage rubber contraceptives like diaphragms or condoms. If you are using this cream in the genital area, it is advisable to use different methods of contraception for during treatment and for 5 days afterwards.

The active ingredient of Canesten cream is clotrimazole 1%.  

It also contains sorbitan stearate, octyldodecanol, polysorbate 60, benzyl alcohol, cetostearyl alcohol, cetyl palmitate, and purified water.
