About Clenil Modulite

Clenil Modulite inhaler is a prescription-only inhaled medication used to treat asthma. It contains the active ingredient beclometasone dipropionate. 

Inhaled corticosteroids, like Clenil Modulite, are common medications used to help control asthma symptoms. They are often known as “preventer” medications because they do not instantly relieve symptoms of asthma. Instead, they work over a long period of time to reduce the inflammation which causes the symptoms.

Reliever inhalers, like Ventolin, are effective at improving symptoms short term but they do not improve asthma in the long-term. This is why preventer inhalers are a very important part of asthma treatment.

Clenil inhalers come in brown packaging and are sometimes referred to as the ‘brown inhaler’ by patients.

How does Clenil work?

This is part of a group of medications called corticosteroids or “steroids” for short. Corticosteroids work by reducing inflammation in the body. Clenil Modulite is an inhaled steroid, therefore it acts upon the small airways in the lungs, reducing swelling and irritation and easing breathing.

Since inflammation in the lungs is one of the main causes of asthma symptoms, it is very important that a patient who has been diagnosed with asthma is on the correct treatment to ensure their symptoms are kept under control. Patients who are using their reliever inhaler such as Ventolin, Salbutamol or Salamol more than twice a week, or who wake up in the night more than twice a week with symptoms should be using a preventer inhaler like Clenil Modulite.

How effective is Clenil Modulite?

The effectiveness of Clenil is measured on a patient by patient basis. Many people find treatment with Clenil Modulite very effective, whereas others may find a different corticosteroid is better at controlling their symptoms. This is why attending a regular asthma review is very important to assess and control your symptoms.

Alternatives to Clenil Modulite

Several steroid inhalers are available for asthma treatment. There are various active ingredients and different types of inhalers. Other inhalers that contain beclometasone include Soprobec, Qvar, and Easyhaler Beclometasone. Inhalers that include different steroid ingredients include Flixotide (contains fluticasone) and Pulmicort Turbohaler (contains budesonide).

Clenil Side Effects

Like all medicines, Clenil can cause side effects. Some side effects are common whereas others are rare.  

The most common side effect of using Clenil is oral thrush. The higher the dose of Clenil, the more likely this side effect is. A good way to prevent this from happening is to brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with water after every dose you take.

Another common side effect is a hoarse voice or sore tongue or throat. Again, rinsing your mouth with water after every dose can help to prevent this side effect. Using a Volumatic spacer device can help prevent this too.

Other side effects are rarer. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, itching, swelling of the throat or lips, trouble breathing) stop using this medicine immediately and seek medical attention.

How to use Clenil Modulite 

You should take Clenil exactly as your doctor has told you to. The inhaler is available in 50mcg, 100mcg, 200mcg, and 250mcg strengths. Usually, Clenil is taken twice a day but your doctor may increase or decrease your dose.  

You should never stop taking your steroid inhaler unless your doctor or healthcare professional tells you to.

To use Clenil, follow the steps below:

1. To remove the mouthpiece cover, hold between the thumb and forefinger, squeeze gently and pull apart as shown. Check inside and outside to make sure that the mouthpiece is clean.
2. If your inhaler is new or has not been used for over three days, spray one puff into the air to make sure that it works.
3. Hold the inhaler upright, with your thumb on the base. Breathe out as far as is comfortable.
4. Put the mouthpiece in your mouth between your teeth and close your lips around it.
5. Just after starting to breathe in through your mouth press down on the top of the inhaler to release a puff while still breathing.
6. Hold your breath and continue holding your breath for a few seconds or as long as is comfortable. Breathe out slowly.
7. Before taking another puff, take the inhaler from your mouth and wait around 30 seconds and then repeat the steps above.

It is important to rinse your mouth out after using your Clenil Modulite inhaler.
