What is Dioralyte?
Dioralyte sachets are powered electrolytes that are important to avoid dehydration when experiencing diarrhoea and vomiting.
They work by replacing lost salts from the body which are important in keeping you hydrated. These promote fluid absorption from the body and assist in preventing dehydration. This effect also helps in returning watery stools back to normal. The powder is a mix of sodium citrate, sodium chloride and potassium chloride and is to be mixed in clean water before taking.
Is Dioralyte effective?
Dioralyte has been clinically proven to quickly replace lost water and body salts often the result of diarrhoea and vomiting. Early use has been shown to be best in avoiding dehydration, especially in the young and elderly.
If you experience worsening symptoms within 24-48 hours consult your doctor or pharmacist.
How to take Dioralyte
If you are unsure of how to use Dioralyte after reading this, ensure you speak to a pharmacist before using Dioralyte.
Prepare the Dioralyte just when it is required, do not premake it if possible. Mix the contents of one Dioralyte sachet into 200mL (7 fl oz) of drinking water. Do not mix with anything other than water. If drinking water is unavailable, use water that has been freshly boiled and cooled.
Stir the water containing the powder until it has fully dissolved.
It is recommended for adults to use ONE sachet after every loose motion up to a maximum of 5 in 24 hours. Each sachet should be mixed with 200mL of drinkable water. If you are experiencing nausea, it is recommended you only take small sips of the medicine as large gulps may worsen nausea.
If prepared before required or you cannot finish a dose, you may store the prepared medicine for up to 24 hours in a refrigerator.
