Practical Tips

Colic can be a difficult condition to deal with, both for the baby experiencing it and the parents dealing with it. While it can be difficult to narrow down the exact cause of colic, the following tips should help you to deal with colic.

Watch what you eat - if you are breastfeeding, the food you eat can sometimes affect the quality of your breastmilk - if your baby is suffering from reflux, this may be causing them more irritation when they feed. Avoid caffeine, milk products, onions and cabbage in particular. Try eliminating one item at a time to see which (if any) of these products causes a reaction.

Watch what they eat - if you are formula feeding your baby, you could try a protein hydrolysate formula. Food sensitivity is a factor in less than 5% of colic cases, but it may help within only a few days. Speak to your doctor or health visitor for more information.

White noise - you can help soothe your baby with a steady, rhythmic noise in the home. Running the washing machine, going for a drive, a fan or even a white noise machine can all provide a soothing sound for your baby to relax to.

Swaddling - help your baby feel safe and comfortable by swaddling them in a thin blanket.

FAQ

How does Infacol work?

When we eat, our body breaks down the food into nutrients our body can use. This creates gases, which are normally expelled from the body. If these small gas bubbles become trapped in your baby’s body, this can cause pressure in the intestine, which can cause pain. The active ingredient, simeticone, breaks the surface tension of these bubbles, causing them to form larger bubbles which can travel through the intestine much easier.

What causes colic?

Colic is defined as a condition where a healthy, well-fed baby cries for more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week, for more than 3 weeks. Colic is very common - as many as 20% of babies will present it at some point. Colic normally has an underlying cause - unfortunately, babies cannot communicate the cause of the issue to us. Colic may be caused by trapped wind, fatigue, reflux, fever or infection. In most cases, colic will seem to stop as quickly as it starts, as whatever underlying condition is set right.

Directions

How To Use Infacol Suspension

Gently shake the bottle before use. Draw up one dropper full by squeezing the rubber bulb twice. Wipe any excess into the bottle.

Place the dropper in your baby’s mouth and squeeze the dropper, releasing the Infacol on the back of your baby’s tongue.

The normal dose is one dropper full (0.5ml) given before each feed. If after 3 or 4 days your baby’s colic is still troubling, you may increase the dosage to 2 droppers full (1ml).

If there is no improvement after raising the dose, speak to your doctor, pharmacist or health visitor.

Infacol should be used for several days, as the build up of medication will have a continued effect. You can continue to use Infacol for up to several weeks. However, if symptoms have shown no improvement, speak to your doctor or health visitor.
