About Stugeron Travel Tablets
Stugeron Travel Tablets are effective in preventing travel sickness. They contain the active ingredient cinnarizine 15mg.
Cinnarizine belongs to the drug class of antihistamines. Unlike conventional antihistamines used primarily to treat allergies, cinnarizine has a different mechanism of action. Cinnarizine acts on receptors within the stomach to prevent muscle contractions and the feeling of nausea experienced when travelling.
Travel sickness if the feeling of nausea associated with travelling - be it in a car, on a boat or by plane. This is a common feeling caused by repeated movements while travelling, such as bumps in a car or moving up and down in a boat. The inner ear, responsible for balance and the notion of movement, sends different signals to your brain to what your eyes are seeing. These conflicting signals can make you feel unwell. Travel sickness is more common in young children but can be experienced by anyone.
There are practical measures you can take to minimize travel sickness:
- Sitting in the front of the car or the middle of the boat where movement is reduced.
- Looking straight ahead at a fixed point, try not to look at moving objects
- Breaking up long car journeys
- Opening car windows to allow fresh air to circulate
- Don’t eat a heavy meal before travelling
- Don’t stare at screens, such as phones or tablets.
- Use of acupressure bands

Effectiveness
Stugeron Travel tablets are widely used and effective in preventing the occurrence of travel sickness, however, everyone can respond to medication differently. If you find that Stugeron Travel tablets are ineffective you may want to try an alternative medication.
Alternatives
There are alternative treatments for travel sickness if you don’t want to try Stugeron Travel tablets:
- Avomine - contains promethazine, a similar antihistamine with antiemetic properties
- Phenergan - contains promethazine, a similar antihistamine with antiemetic properties
- Kwells - contains hyoscine hydrobromide which has antiemetic properties at low doses.
- Scopoderm patches - contains hyoscine hydrobromide in a patch form applied to the skin.
If you have young children or prefer not to take tablets acupressure bands are also available. These work by applying pressure to a particular point between the tendons on the inside of the wrist. Although there is little supporting evidence of how they work, they have no adverse effects and therefore may be an option.
Promethazine Vs Cinnarizine
Promethazine and cinnarizine are both belong to the same class of antihistamine and act in a similar way. Both are sedating, however, promethazine has a longer duration of action and is, therefore, more sedating. It should be taken the night before travelling with a second dose the morning of if required. Both can be taken by children over the age of five.
Antihistamines Vs Hyoscine
Hyoscine is effective in treating motion sickness and is a widely used antiemetic. It acts by blocking some signals sent from the inner ear to the brain, reducing conflicting signals and the feeling of nausea.
Hyoscine is generally thought to be more effective than antihistamines in preventing travel sickness but does come with the risk of more side effects. These include dizziness, drowsiness and blurred vision.
Hyoscine tablets can be used in children over the age of four.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
It is not advised that you take Stugeron Travel tablets if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult your pharmacist or doctor if you require treatment for travel sickness or nausea in pregnancy.
