What is Atorvastatin?

Atorvastatin is a medicine used to lower cholesterol in people who have high cholesterol levels. It belongs to a group of medicines called statins

It can be used to prevent cardiovascular disease. It can help prevent heart attacks and strokes in people at risk, or in people who have had a previous heart attack or stroke. The brand name for atorvastatin is Lipitor. Atorvastatin is a prescription-only medicine.

How does it work?

High cholesterol is diagnosed by a blood test. A blood test can determine whether your levels are high and how much ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cholesterol you have.

Atorvastatin, like other statins, works by reducing blood cholesterol levels. Statins do this by blocking an enzyme in the body (called HMG CoA reductase) that is responsible for making cholesterol. Blocking this enzyme slows down the production of ‘bad’ cholesterol in the liver, reducing ‘bad’ cholesterol levels in the body. Because they inhibit this enzyme, statins like atorvastatin are known as HMG CoA reductase inhibitors.

What does atorvastatin do to the body?

You can drink alcohol with statins, however, drinking large amounts of alcohol while taking atorvastatin should be avoided. Try not to drink more than the recommended 14 units of alcohol a week.

When to take atorvastatin, morning or night?

Some statins are more effective if taken at night but this does not apply to atorvastatin. Atorvastatin can be taken at any time of day, as long as it is taken at the same time each day.
