What is Ciprofloxacin 500mg?
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the family of medicines known as quinolone antibiotics. It’s used to kill a wide range of bacteria that can cause bacterial infections. It will only work on specific strains of bacteria such as the bacteria responsible for causing travellers diarrhoea. This is particularly common for travellers to places such as Asia and south-east Asia as you may not be accustomed to the bacteria you are exposed to in these regions.
It may be used to treat a number of infections however, you may only request this treatment from us for travellers diarrhoea, other suspected infections such as respiratory tract infections, UTIs, bone and joint infections, and skin infections must be diagnosed and assessed by a doctor in person before being prescribed.
How does Ciprofloxacin work?
Quinolone antibiotics work by targeting the DNA replication of the bacteria, turning it toxic, killing the bacteria. This is why these medicines are known as bactericidal (actively kills bacteria).
Depending on the type of bacteria and if there is any resistance to antibiotics, alternative antibiotics can be used to treat travellers diarrhoea. Contact your doctor for medical advice to decide what treatment will suit your situation.
