What is Amias?
Amias is the brand version of the generic medicine candesartan. It is used to treat people diagnosed with high blood pressure (hypertension). It can also be prescribed to treat patients with heart failure and can sometimes be used to prevent migraines.
Amias is a medicine known as an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). The active ingredient is candesartan cilexetil. Branded versions of medicines are often more expensive than the generic versions.
How does it work?
Amias helps to reduce blood pressure in patients diagnosed with high blood pressure. It does this by having a relaxing effect on blood vessels. This causes the vessels to widen and allows for easier blood flow. This makes it easier for each heart beat to pump blood around the body and causes a reduction in blood pressure.
Taking medicines to reduce high blood pressure is vital because it helps to protect against the long term effects of hypertension. Untreated high blood pressure can over time cause the blood vessels stiffen and your heart is put under increasing strain. This may lead to severe illnesses such as strokes, heart attacks, vascular dementia, and kidney disease.
By taking medicines like Amias to reduce your blood pressure, you can lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of developing the above serious illnesses. If you are unsure whether you have high blood pressure or not, see our article on the symptoms of hypertension.
Lifestyle changes are another effective way to reduce blood pressure. This includes reducing the amount of salt in your diet, losing weight if you’re overweight, exercising regularly and stopping smoking. Medication to aid weight loss and stopping smoking are available from our online doctor.
A blood pressure test is the only way to diagnose hypertension.. You can speak to your GP surgery or local pharmacy to get a blood pressure reading. BP monitors are also available to buy and give people the option of checking their own blood pressure at home.
Dose
Amias is available in five strengths: 2 mg, 4 mg, 8 mg, 16 mg, and 32 mg.
Your doctor will decide the most suitable dose for you based on several factors (e.g how high your blood pressure is). Usually, the recommended starting dose is 8mg once daily. This can be gradually increased if your doctor thinks it is necessary. The maximum daily dose is 32mg.
Some people may be started on Amias 4mg tablets.
You should take this exactly as your doctor has told you. It can be taken at any time of the day.
Alternatives
Several types of medicines can be used to treat high blood pressure. Different types are used in different situations and for different groups of patients. Apart from ARBs, other examples include:
- Diuretics (such as thiazide diuretics)
- Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
- Calcium channel blockers (CCBs)
- Beta-blockers
Different ARBs exist to treat hypertension such as valsartan, olmesartan and telmisartan.
