Treatments

Norethisterone / Utovlan

Norethisterone works by keeping levels of the female hormone, progesterone, in the body up. This in turn stops your womb lining from shedding, and so delaying your period.

Norethisterone is basically a synthetic version of progesterone. Norethisterone is not a method of contraception. Is is therefor important that you should continue to use contraceptive methods if you do not want to become pregnant. Norethisterone should also not be taken if you are already taking the combined contraceptive pill. You can however take it while taking the mini pill. Norethisterone is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Norethisterone works by keeping levels of the female hormone, progesterone, in the body up. This in turn stops your womb lining from shedding, and so delaying your period. Norethisterone is basically a synthetic version of progesterone.

Most brands of the pill (combined pill), can delay your period if packs are taken back to back, and if you have already been taking the pill for a couple of months. Norethisterone should be used if you have just started taking the pill, as this method will not work.

The mechanism of how the pill works in preventing a period is the same as norethistrone. It keeps levels of the female hormone up, thus preventing shedding from the womb.

It is allowable to take up to three packets back to back, however some women can experience spotting or breakthrough bleeds.

Combined Oral Contraceptives that prevent your period include popular brands such as

– Microgynon

– Rigevidon

– Cilest

– Yasmin
