What is Kliovance?
Kliovance is a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It is used to treat symptoms of the menopause. It can also be used to prevent osteoporosis in women at risk of the condition. Kliovance is not prescribed to women with a regular menstrual cycle, it is only used by postmenopausal women with more than 1 year since their last period.
Kliovance contains two active ingredients:
- An oestrogen called estradiol
- A progestogen called norethisterone
Kliovance is called a continuous combined HRT because each tablet contains both hormones.
How does it work?
Oestrogen levels in the body drop during the menopause. This drop can cause symptoms such as hot flushes, difficulty sleeping, night sweats, reduced sex drive, vaginal dryness, and mood changes. Kliovance increases oestrogen levels by replacing the lost oestrogen, helping to alleviate symptoms.
An increase in oestrogen levels can cause an overgrowth of the womb lining (endometrium). This increases the risk of womb cancer. Most HRT products, including Kliovance, contain a progestogen which helps to protect against the increased risk of womb cancer.
Kliovance is prescribed for women who have not had their womb removed.
Dose
One tablet is taken daily, ideally at the same time every day. A break should not be taken between packs.
If you forget to take a tablet, take it as soon as you remember within the next 12 hours. If the tablet was missed by more than 12 hours, you should discard that tablet and take the next tablet the next day as normal.
Treatment can be started on any day unless you are switching from HRT tablets that produce a monthly bleed. In this case, you should start the first Kliovance tablet immediately after the monthly bleed has ended.

FAQ
What are the side effects of Kliovance?
Kliovance has a number of potential side effects. Some of the most common side effects are:
- Vaginal bleeding
- Breast pain or tenderness
- Headache
- Back pain
- Enlargement or swelling of the breasts
- Migraine
- Vaginal inflammation
- Weight gain from retaining water
- Nausea
The patient information leaflet contains a complete list of the potential side effects of Kliovance.
How long does Kliovance take to work?
The full effects of HRT can take up to three months to show but some women may notice benefits within a few weeks of starting therapy.
What type of HRT is Kliovance?
Kliovance is a continuous combined HRT. This is because it combines both hormones (estradiol and norethisterone) in one tablet and both hormones are taken every day.
The other type is called cyclical HRT, or sequential HRT. Cyclical HRT is usually recommended for women who have menopausal symptoms but still have their periods.
Does HRT cause weight gain?
Research has shown that women can gain weight during the menopause. However, the manufacturers of Kliovance list ‘weight increase’ and ‘weight gain due to water retention’ as common side effects of treatment. This means that more than 1 in 100 women will have these as a side effect.
Who should not use HRT?
Kliovance should not be used in a number of conditions. If you develop any of these conditions during treatment you should stop taking HRT. Examples of these are:
- Current cancer which is sensitive to oestrogens, such as endometrial cancer, or a history of such cancers
- A current blood clot or a history of blood clots
- A blood clotting disorder
- Current breast cancer or a history of breast cancer
- Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- Recent heart attack or stroke
- Current liver disease or a history of liver disease
- Endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the womb lining)

Side Effects
There is always a risk of side effects when taking any medicine.
Common side effects of Kliovance include:
- Vaginal bleeding
- Breast pain or tenderness
- Headache
- Back pain
- Enlargement or swelling of the breasts
- Migraine (treatment should stop if new migraines happen during treatment)
- Vaginal inflammation
- Weight gain from retaining water
- Nausea
These side effects may improve over time.
The patient information leaflet contains a comprehensive list of possible side effects.
Before starting therapy women should be aware of the potential risks of HRT. Women taking HRT report the following diseases more often than women who do not take HRT:
- Endometrial cancer (the progestogen in Kliovance mitigates this risk)
- Ovarian cancer
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Blood clots (venous thromboembolism)
- Breast cancer
The risk of blood clots in HRT users is up to 3x higher than in non-users. The risk is highest during the first year of treatment.
The risk of having a stroke is about 1.5 times higher in HRT users than in non-users. The risk of stroke due to HRT use increases with age.
The increased risk of breast cancer means that, out of 1000 women using HRT, 4-6 extra women in a 5 year period will be diagnosed with breast cancer compared to non-users of HRT.
Women taking HRT should be regularly checked by their doctor to monitor treatment and side effects. The NHS website contains information on the symptoms of blood clots, breast cancer, endometrial cancer and stroke as well as information on the risks of HRT.
