How does Foundayo cause weight loss?
Foundayo (orforglipron) causes weight loss by mimicking a signal the body already uses to control hunger. After every meal, your body releases glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). This hormone travels to your brain and tells it you have had enough. It generates a feeling of fullness.
Normally, the signal fades within minutes, but Foundayo keeps it going for longer. Your stomach empties more slowly, reducing hunger between meals. You end up eating less without having to actively restrict your portions.
Foundayo’s mechanism of action matches that of Wegovy and Mounjaro. Where Foundayo differs is in how it is built. Other GLP-1 treatments contain small proteins called peptides. Because stomach acid breaks them down, most come as injections to bypass the gut.
Oral Wegovy needs a protective coating, to be taken on an empty stomach with no more than a small sip of water (120mls) to reach the bloodstream intact.
So what is Foundayo? Foundayo is a GLP-1 agonist, too. But it is a non-peptide small molecule that survives stomach acid. Your body absorbs around 79% of every dose.Â
You can take Foundayo at any time of day. You don’t need to fast or delay taking other medications, and needles are entirely avoided.
What does Foundayo do in the brain?
Food stops being on your mind as much. That is one of the first things people notice on Foundayo. You might get to 2 pm and realise you forgot about lunch. Or go a whole morning without thinking about what to eat next.
Foundayo acts on GLP-1 receptors in the hypothalamus, the hunger centre in your brain, and quietens the signals that keep you thinking about food.
Foundayo also appears to impact how your brain responds to food on an emotional level. Your brain normally rewards you for eating high-calorie or sugary food. The same impulse makes you reach for chocolate at the end of a long day.
Foundayo seems to dull the reward signals. The result? People often say the evening cravings, the urge to pick at food after dinner – they simply stop.
Changes are usually subtle at first. After a few weeks, you may come to realise you barely think about food anymore. Feeling full mid-meal has become the norm. You will likely feel the difference in your appetite before you see it in your weight or inch loss.
How does Foundayo affect digestion?
Meals feel different on Foundayo. Digestion slows down, so food remains in your stomach longer than usual. That full, heavy feeling after eating lasts well past the point where it would normally fade. You are often less hungry for your next meal than anticipated.
Slower stomach emptying is also behind the most common side effects. Nausea, vomiting, and bloating are usually at their worst early in treatment and during dose increases. Starting at a low dose and gradually increasing, with at least 30 days between each step up, gives your stomach time to adjust to the medication.
How long does it take for Foundayo to work?
Do not expect to step on the scale after a week and see a drastic difference. Foundayo works gradually. Appetite changes usually come first. You may see these within the first few weeks.
Weight changes usually come later, building over months. With most GLP-1 treatments, weight loss tends to slow after the first year.
Treatment starts at 0.8 mg, with at least 30 days between each step up to give your body time to adjust. You can stay on a dose for longer if required.
Not everyone reaches the highest dose of 17.2 mg. Some people find that a lower dose is already doing enough. How quickly you move up depends on how you respond and what you experience.
How much can I lose with Foundayo?
In clinical trials, people taking the highest dose of Foundayo saw an average weight loss of around 11%. That is roughly 11 kg at a starting weight of 100 kg. Weight loss results were lower at smaller maintenance doses.
Results at mid-range doses (9 mg and 14.5 mg) fell in between. The placebo group lost around 2%.
These results come from the 2025 ATTAIN-1 trial. It followed over 3000 adults with obesity or who were overweight (with at least 1 weight related condition) for 72 weeks. All participants combined Foundayo with a healthy, balanced diet and increased physical activity.Â
How much you lose depends on several things. The dose you settle at plays a role, and not everyone needs to reach 17.2 mg. What you eat and how active you are matter just as much. Foundayo works best when used alongside healthy changes to your eating habits and increase in activity levels, rather than instead of them.
Focusing on balanced nutrition, regular movement, and your overall wellbeing can help you build healthier habits that support long-term results beyond weight loss alone.
When should I see a doctor?
Most side effects on Foundayo are mild and settle on their own. Other symptoms are less common but need immediate medical attention.
| Symptoms | What it may mean | What to do |
| Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Difficulty breathing. Fast heartbeat. | Severe allergic reaction | Call 999 |
| Severe stomach pain that does not go away, or spreads to your back | Pancreatitis | Go to A&E immediately |
| Dizziness, dark urine, or producing little urine | Severe dehydration | Go to A&E immediately |
| Vomiting that does not settle within 24 hours | Risk of dehydration | See your GP immediately or call NHS 111 |
| Nausea severe enough to stop you from eating or drinking for more than a day | Risk of dehydration | See your GP immediately or call NHS 111 |
| Yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusually pale stools, or dark urine | Possible gallbladder or liver problem | See your GP as soon as possible or call NHS 111 |
| A lump or swelling in your neck, difficulty swallowing, or a hoarse voice that persists | Possible thyroid issue | See your GP immediately or call NHS 111 |
| Changes to your vision | Possible NAION (Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy) risk | See your GP as soon as possible or call NHS 111 |
| Side effects not settling after a dose increase | May need to stay on current dose longer | Contact our clinical team |
| Nausea or digestive symptoms affecting your daily routine | May need dose adjustment or support | Contact our clinical team |
In animal studies, other GLP-1 treatments caused thyroid tumours in rodents. Whether this applies to people is still unknown. The FDA considers the risk serious enough to require screening before treatment starts.
You should not take Foundayo if you or a close family member has ever had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The same applies if you have a condition called multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
If anyone in your family has had thyroid cancer, raise it with our clinical team before starting treatment. This applies even if you are not sure of the exact type.
Foundayo is not suitable for patients with diabetic retinopathy. If you experience any changes to your vision while you use Foundayo, stop taking it and seek urgent medical attention. This may be a sign of Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION).
Frequently asked questions
How does orforglipron work differently from other GLP-1 pills?
Orforglipron is the active ingredient in Foundayo. It works the same way as other GLP-1 treatments, activating receptors in the brain that reduce appetite and slow stomach emptying.
The orforglipron mechanism of action is identical, but its structure differs. Orforglipron is a non-peptide small molecule, not a protein. Stomach acid does not break it down. No fasting rules and no protective coatings required, unlike oral Wegovy.
Is Foundayo available in the UK?
Not yet. Foundayo is already available in the US. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it in April 2026 for adults with obesity, or adults who are overweight and also have at least one weight-related health condition.Â
UK review by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) is still pending. A decision is expected in late 2026 or 2027. If approved, private prescribers are likely to offer it before the NHS.
Do I need a prescription for Foundayo?
Yes. Foundayo GLP-1 is a prescription-only medicine. You cannot buy it over the counter or online without a prescription. If it becomes available in the UK, you will need a prescriber to confirm you meet the criteria. Then you can start treatment.
Can I take Foundayo with other GLP-1 treatments?
No. Foundayo should not be taken alongside other GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines, including Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro, Saxenda or Nevolat. If you are on another GLP-1 treatment and want to switch, speak with your prescriber about how to transition safely.
Do I need to swallow the tablet whole?
Yes. Swallow Foundayo tablets whole with water. Do not crush, break, chew or dissolve them.
