What Is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a weight loss injection that can be an effective aid to weight-loss when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased exercise. The weight loss drug contains the active ingredient semaglutide. Unlike other weight loss shots, Wegovy is injected once a week and can be used by adults with a body mass index (BMI) over 30. It can also be used by people with a BMI over 27 with weight-related conditions (such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes).

Some patients choose to maintain at 1mg for affordability, but maximum weight loss is achieved at the 2.4mg dose. This is reached through a 5-step titration, with fewer steps than other alternatives.
0.25mg - Starter Dose
This is the starter dose, which is used for the first 4 weeks to allow your body to adjust.
Price: £118.98 per 4 doses (1 month)
0.5mg - Titration Dose
This dose follows 0.25mg and continues the safe titration process.
Price: £139 per 4 doses (1 month)
1mg - Effective Dose
Patients typically begin to notice more significant weight loss at this stage.
Price: From £149 per 4 doses (1 month)
1.7mg - Titration Dose
This dose should only be used after titration. This dose is often associated with more visible progress.
Price: £219 per 4 doses (1 month)
2.4mg - Maintenance Dose
This is the full maintenance dose, where maximum weight loss is typically achieved.
Price: From £253.99 per 4 doses (1 month)
How to Take Wegovy
The dose is increased every 4 weeks for 16 weeks. This means that patients take a 0.25mg once weekly dose for the first 4 weeks and gradually increase it until they reach the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly from week 17 onwards.
This gradual increase is important because it minimises the risk of side effects. If side effects do occur, most will be experienced during the dose-escalation phase before improving.
It can be taken at any time of day and can be taken with or without meals.
Many patients ask where it should be injected. The advice is it should be injected subcutaneously into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm.
The injection site should ideally be rotated, to avoid a single area being used.
Clinical trials have shown that Wegovy treatment resulted in a statistically significant reduction in body weight compared to placebo after 68 weeks. One trial showed that people taking Wegovy had a mean change in body weight of 14.9% compared to 2.4% in the placebo group.
The results also showed that, after 68 weeks, 83.5% of patients lost 5% or more of their body weight. In the placebo group, 31.1% of patients lost 5% or more of their body weight. Another clinical trial also showed a statistically significant reduction in body weight vs placebo.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended Wegovy for weight management for those living with obesity due to the highly positive trial results.

Can Wegovy Help with Other Conditions?
While Wegovy has shown great results for weight loss, research shows it might have additional benefits. The SELECT [1] study, conducted world-wide with over 17,000 patients, aimed to demonstrate Wegovy’s ability to reduce a patient’s chances of experiencing a repeat cardiovascular event (such as a heart attack or stroke).
The study appeared to be successful, showing a 20% risk reduction (SELECT trial - See section 5.1 - here) - so you are 20% less likely to have a heart attack/stroke if you have had one previously, independent of weight lost. This shows that Wegovy has specific beneficial properties on the heart.
This is what sets Wegovy apart from other similar weight loss medications; it has significant evidence to back up its positive impact on reducing the risk of a secondary heart attack or stroke. So, if you have cardiovascular disease, such as a previous heart attack or stroke, and are in two minds as to which weight loss option is for you, this may be a point of difference.
If you have any questions about our treatment options, and their benefits, please get in touch with our clinical team.
Contraindications & Drug Interactions
This medicine is not suitable for anyone who has had an allergic reaction to semaglutide or any of the other ingredients in the injection.
Wegovy can cause digestive system side effects like vomiting and diarrhoea. These side effects can increase the risk of dehydration, so you should make sure that you drink enough fluids. This is even more important for people with kidney problems.
An uncommon side effect that may be experienced is pancreatitis. If you notice any symptoms of pancreatitis, such as severe stomach pain, stop using Wegovy and see a doctor straight away. You can read more about pancreatitis symptoms on the NHS website.
People with diabetes should not use Wegovy as a substitute for insulin. It can also increase the risk of getting low blood sugar levels when taken with other diabetic medicines. See section 2 of the patient information leaflet for a full list of warnings.
Wegovy has not been shown to affect the oral hormonal contraceptive pill. Other weight loss drugs reduce the effectiveness of oral hormonal contraceptives, so additional barrier methods should be used at each titration/new dose for 4 weeks. This is not required for Wegovy.
Some patients on GLP-1 treatments are concerned about contraception, but Wegovy doesn’t require additional barrier methods and has fewer interactions with narrow therapeutic index medicines.
This medication is not suitable for anyone experiencing diabetic retinopathy. Speak to your doctor before using Wegovy if this applies to you.
Wegovy and Pregnancy
It should not be used in pregnancy because it may harm the foetus. Wegovy should be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy. You should not use this medicine if you are breastfeeding.
Wegovy Side Effects
As with all medicines, some people may experience side effects from the treatment. Not everyone will get them and a majority will be mild. Only 5.3% of patients in one clinical trial stopped Wegovy due to side effects.
The most common Wegovy side effects are headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, and fatigue. These side effects usually improve over time as your body gets used to the medicine. Gradually increasing the dose every 4 weeks helps to reduce the risk of experiencing these side effects. If you find your side effects are severe or aren’t improving, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
There are many alternative weight loss treatments available in the UK, including Orlistat and its branded equivalent Xenical. Saxenda is the closest medicine to Wegovy currently licensed for weight loss in the UK. It works in the same way and is manufactured by the same company, Novo Nordisk. Saxenda is injected once daily into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm.
Ozempic is also available to buy from some UK weight loss clinics. Ozempic also contains Semaglutide, the same active ingredient that's in Wegovy. However, the treatment is licensed for use in diabetes. While it is legal to prescribe it for weight loss, we currently choose not to do so, due to the possible impact on diabetic patients who require this medication.
There is not currently a generic form of Wegovy - this treatment is too new to be replicated. Unlike Wegovy, generic drugs that are equivalent to many medications are available through our online store.
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 agonist medication licensed in the UK for weight management in adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or overweight (BMI ≥27) with weight-related health conditions.
How does Wegovy work?
It mimics the GLP-1 hormone to slow digestion, reduce appetite, and increase satiety, helping lower calorie intake and support sustained weight loss.
Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?
Both contain semaglutide, but Wegovy is approved for weight loss at higher doses (up to 2.4mg weekly), while Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes at lower doses.
Is Wegovy safe?
Yes, when prescribed appropriately. It is MHRA‑approved but is contraindicated for individuals with a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, pancreatitis, or those who are pregnant.
Usage & Dosage
How is Wegovy administered?
It is administered as a once‑weekly subcutaneous injection in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.
What is the dosage schedule?
Begin at 0.25mg per week for 4 weeks, then gradually increase every 4 weeks to a maintenance dose of 2.4mg per week. Never exceed 2.4mg.
What if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose within 5 days. If more than 5 days pass, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule.
Can I adjust the dose myself?
No. You must follow the prescribed titration schedule to minimise side effects.
Effectiveness & Results
How much weight can I lose with Wegovy?
Clinical trials show an average weight loss of 15–17% combined with diet and exercise.
How long until I see results?
Most users notice appetite suppression within days, while significant weight loss typically begins after 8–12 weeks.
Will I regain weight if I stop Wegovy?
Weight regain is possible without ongoing lifestyle changes such as healthier eating and increased physical activity. Wegovy is intended for long‑term use under medical supervision.
Does Wegovy improve obesity-related conditions?
Yes, it can reduce risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and improve overall metabolic health.
Side Effects & Safety
What are common side effects?
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and abdominal pain. These often resolve as the body adjusts.
Can Wegovy cause thyroid cancer?
Animal studies have linked semaglutide to thyroid tumours. Wegovy should be avoided if you or any family members have a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN syndrome.
Is Wegovy safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. Wegovy is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Discontinue use if planning pregnancy and use contraception while on treatment.
Interactions
Does Wegovy interact with other medications?
Wegovy may increase the risk of hypoglycaemia if used with insulin or sulfonylureas. Additionally, oral contraceptives may be less effective—use backup contraception if necessary.
Can I drink alcohol with Wegovy?
Moderate alcohol consumption is generally acceptable when using Wegovy. However, excessive drinking may worsen gastrointestinal side effects. It's also worth noting that many alcoholic drinks are calorie-dense, which can hinder your ability to lose weight.
Storage
How should I store Wegovy?
Unopened pens should be refrigerated at 2–8°C. Once opened, store at room temperature (≤30°C) and use within 42 days.
Access & Cost
Is Wegovy available on the NHS?
Wegovy has limited availability on the NHS and is primarily prescribed privately for weight loss.
Can I buy Wegovy online in the UK?
Yes. For example, Simple Online Pharmacy offers Wegovy after a clinician reviews your eligibility through an online consultation.
How much does Wegovy cost?
Prices typically range from £150 to £250 per month, depending on the dose and prescription length.
What are alternatives to Wegovy?
Alternatives include Saxenda (liraglutide), orlistat, or Mounjaro (tirzepatide). Consult with your clinician to determine the best option for you.
