What is Evorel Sequi?
Evorel Sequi is a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It is used to relieve symptoms associated with the menopause. It can also be used in post-menopausal women at risk of osteoporosis.
HRT uses oestrogen to replace the lost oestrogen from the menopause. Most HRT products also contain a progestogen.
Evorel Sequi packs contain Evorel 50 (oestrogen-only patches) and Evorel Conti (oestrogen + progestogen patches). A treatment cycle is 28 days. During the first 14 days, Evorel 50 patches are worn and during the next 14 days, Evorel Conti patches are worn.
Evorel Sequi is called a continuous sequential HRT preparation.
How does it work?
Levels of the female sex hormone oestrogen drop during the menopause. This drop causes symptoms of the menopause like night sweats, hot flushes, reduced sex drive, mood swings, and vaginal dryness.
Evorel patches contain the active ingredient estradiol which is an oestrogen. This is absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream. This replaces the oestrogen lost during the menopause and relieves symptoms.
Taking oestrogen increases the risk of womb cancer because oestrogen causes an overgrowth of the endometrium (womb lining). Using a progestogen alongside an oestrogen protects against this increased risk of womb cancer. For that reason, most HRT products such as Evorel Sequi contain both an oestrogen and progestogen (estradiol and norethisterone). Women who have had their womb removed are able to take oestrogen-only HRT.
Dose
The patches should be applied to a hairless area of the body below the waist, it must not be applied on or near the breasts. Patches should not be applied to the same area twice in a row. They should be worn under loose-fitting clothing.
Instructions on how to apply the patch are on page 10 of the patient information leaflet.
Evorel Sequi patches must be changed twice per week but they have to be used in the right order.
- For the first two weeks of the pack, Evorel 50 patches should be used (changed twice per week, four patches in total).
- For the third and fourth week of the pack, Evorel Conti patches should be used (changed twice per week, four patches in total).
If a patch falls off, replace it with the same type of patch. It is always useful to have a spare pack to replace any patches that fall off.

Side Effects
There is always a risk of side effects when taking any medicine.
Common side effects of Evorel Sequi include:
- Nausea
- Headache
- Problems sleeping
- Diarrhoea
- Breast tenderness
- Irritated skin where the patch is applied
- Weight gain
These side effects may improve over time when using Evorel patches.
The patient information leaflet for Evorel Sequi contains further information on the side effects of HRT.
HRT can be very beneficial for women with menopause symptoms however, there are potential risks associated with treatment. The following diseases are reported more often in women taking HRT compared to women not taking HRT:
- Breast cancer
- Stroke
- Endometrial (womb) cancer
- Heart disease
- Ovarian cancer
- Blood clots (venous thromboembolism)
Oestrogen-only HRT has an increased risk of womb cancer but HRT containing progestogens, like Evorel Sequi, protects against this risk.
The risk of blood clots in HRT users is highest during the first year of treatment. The increased risk is up to 3x higher in users of HRT compared with non-users.
The risks of taking HRT may be different in women who have early menopause. If this is the case for you, you should discuss these risks with your doctor.
There is evidence to suggest HRT use increases the risk of breast cancer. The risk increases the longer HRT is taken for. This increased risk returns to normal within about 5 years of stopping treatment.
Patients should be routinely monitored by their doctor during HRT treatment. Treatment with HRT should only be started if the benefits outweigh the risks and doctors should take a full medical history before prescribing. Further information can be found on the NHS website for breast cancer, blood clots, stroke and endometrial cancer as well as information on the risks of HRT.
