What Is Yasmin?

Yasmin is a popular and effective contraceptive pill. It contains two active ingredients which help to prevent ovulation and make it harder for sperm to reach the uterus. These two active ingredients are two different female hormones called drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. They are synthetic versions of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

This type of hormonal contraception pill is called a 'combination' pill, or a combined oral contraceptive (COC) pill.

With any medication, there are risks involved, and so you should have all your regular check-ups with your GP each year. Your GP surgery should, when you’re taking Yasmin pills, review you regularly. This ensures it is safe for you to continue taking the pill.

How Does Yasmin Work?

The Yasmin contraceptive pill contains two different female hormones called drospirenone and ethinylestradiol. This combination of hormones stops the body from ovulating (releasing an egg) and reduces the likelihood of sperm reaching the uterus by thickening the mucus of the uterus.

It also makes it harder for a fertilised egg to implant into the lining of the womb and be able to grow. These effects make the Yasmin combined pill an effective contraceptive.

How Effective Is Yasmin?

When used correctly Yasmin birth control, like other combined pills, is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. This means that less than 1 in 100 women taking it correctly over a year will get pregnant.

If you would like to see what Yasmin users think, we have a collection of reviews from our UK patients you can use to make an informed decision before starting treatment.

Does Yasmin Cause Weight Gain?

One of the side effects of contraceptive pills is that there can be fluctuations in weight. This is listed as an uncommon side effect for the pill Yasmin. If you find your weight gain is difficult to control, you should speak to your GP about switching to a different birth control pill.

Can I take Yasmin if I'm Breastfeeding?

Taking the pill is generally not advised if you are breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, speak to your doctor before taking any hormonal contraceptive.

Side Effects

Yasmin Pill Side Effects

There is always a risk of side effects when taking any medicine. Please read the patient information leaflet to be aware of the potential side effects.

Common Yasmin side effects include headaches, nausea, breast pain, changes in sex drive, and mood swings. An uncommon side effect of the Yasmin pill is acne. Less than 1 in 100 women will experience this as a side effect.

Contact your doctor if these side effects persist or are uncomfortable.

Blood Clots

Taking a combined pill, like Yasmin, slightly increases your risks of developing a blood clot. Women with a history of blood clots are advised not to take a combined pill for this reason. When taking the combined pill, you should be aware of the symptoms of a blood clot and seek medical attention immediately if you notice these symptoms.

Women at an increased risk of blood clots include women older than 35, a BMI over 30, and a family history of blood clots.

Cancer

Some evidence suggests there may be a slightly increased risk of breast and cervical cancers in women taking a combined pill. The NHS website has more information on symptoms of breast cancer and cervical cancer. The patient information leaflet discusses this increased risk in detail.

Info Leaflet

Before taking any medication, it is important to read the Patient Information Leaflet. You can find information leaflets for your medicines by typing them into the search bar at medicines.org, or by contacting us.

Directions

How to take Yasmin

One Yasmin tablet is taken once daily, at the same time every day. It is a 21-day pill pack, meaning one pill is taken every day for 21 days (starting on day 1 of your menstrual cycle), followed by a 7 day break. Yasmin strips are each marked with the day of the week.

You will likely have withdrawal bleeding similar to your menstrual periods during the 7 days when you stop taking the pill. You are still protected during these 7 days and do not need to use additional contraception.

Start taking the next strip of Yasmin tabs after the seven pill-free days – even if you are still bleeding. It is important to begin the new strip on time. Each strip contains 21 pills.

Switching from a different pill to Yasmin

The advice for switching from a different pill varies depending on the type of pill you were taking. See section 3 of the patient information leaflet for detailed information on how to start taking Yasmin after stopping another pill.

What should I do if I miss a Yasmin pill?

If you are less than 12 hours late taking a tablet, you are still protected against pregnancy. Take the tablet as soon as you remember and then take the following tablets again at the usual time.

If you are more than 12 hours late taking a tablet, this counts as a missed pill and your protection against pregnancy may be reduced. If you have missed more than one pill, you are at greater risk of pregnancy.

The rules differ depending on what point of the strip you missed a pill. Page 14 of the patient information leaflet contains a table that explains this or you can see our missed pill guide.
