What is Elleste Solo?

Elleste Solo is called a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It is used to alleviate symptoms caused by the menopause such as hot flushes.

Elleste Solo is called an oestrogen-only HRT because it only contains one hormone, an oestrogen. The other type of HRT is called combined HRT because they contain both an oestrogen and a progestogen.

The oestrogen in Elleste Solo is called estradiol hemihydrate. This is the active ingredient. It comes in two different strengths:

  • Elleste Solo 1mg (1mg of estradiol)
  • Elleste Solo 2mg (2mg of estradiol)

How does it work?

During the menopause oestrogen levels in the body drop and can cause symptoms such as hot flushes, mood swings, night sweats, vaginal dryness and reduced sex drive. Elleste Solo contains a hormone called estradiol. This hormone replaces the lost oestrogen in the body and the increase in oestrogen levels alleviates the symptoms of menopause.

Generally HRT is given as a combination of progestogen and oestrogen, such as in Elleste Duet (cyclical HRT) or Elleste Duet Conti (continuous combined HRT). The reason for this is because oestrogen causes an overgrowth of the womb lining (endometrium) which increases the risk of womb cancer. The progestogen in combined HRT products protects against this increased risk.

Unless taken alongside a progestogen containing product, Elleste Solo should only be used by women who have had their womb removed.

Dose

One tablet should be taken at the same time each day and when you finish a strip, the next strip should be started the next day. If you forget to take a tablet and it is more than 12 hours late, you should dispose of the tablet and take the next one at the usual time the following day.

Women who still have regular periods should take the first tablet on the first day of bleeding.

Women who do not have regular periods can start the tablets straight away.

Side Effects

There is always a risk of side effects when taking any medicine.

Some of the common side effects when taking Elleste Solo are:

  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Breakthrough bleeding
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Breast tenderness
  • Libido changes

These side effects may improve over time when taking Elleste Solo.

The patient information leaflet contains a comprehensive list of possible side effects.

There are risks associated with taking HRT that women should be aware of before starting treatment. The following diseases are reported more often in women taking HRT compared to women not taking HRT:

  • Stroke
  • Breast cancer
  • Blood clots (venous thromboembolism)
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Endometrial cancer (in women with a womb)

The risk of womb cancer for women not taking HRT means that 5 women in 1000 will be diagnosed between the ages of 50 and 65. In women who take an oestrogen-only HRT (like Elleste Solo) the risk is between 10-60 women in 1000 will be diagnosed. Taking a progestogen alongside oestrogen helps to protect women from this extra risk. For this reason, it is crucial to take a progestogen during Elleste Solo treatment if you have a womb.

There is evidence to suggest HRT use increases the risk of breast cancer. The extra risk depends on how long HRT is taken for. The risk of breast cancer returns to normal within a few years of stopping treatment. Evidence suggests there is little or no increased risk for women taking Elleste Solo who have had their womb removed.

The risk of blood clots in HRT users is up to 3x higher than in non-users. The risk is highest during the first year of treatment.

The risks of taking HRT may be different in women who have an early menopause. If this is the case for you, you should discuss these risks with your doctor.

Patients should be routinely monitored by their doctor during HRT treatment.

The NHS website contains information on the symptoms of blood clots, breast cancer, endometrial cancer and stroke as well as information on the risks of HRT.
