What Is Spedra?

Spedra is one of the newest and lesser-known treatments for erectile dysfunction. It contains the active ingredient Avanafil and is available in 50mg, 100mg and 200mg strengths.

It is a PDE5 inhibitor, which is the same class of medicine as the more well known ED treatments, Viagra and Cialis. While not as well known, Spedra is the fastest acting erectile dysfunction medication taking 15 to 30 minutes to work.

How Does Spedra Work?

It works by increasing blood flow into the erectile tissue of the penis. This improves mens ability to get an erection. It does not have an impact on libido, only your ability to get and maintain an erection when sexually aroused. Generally, the amount of sexual stimulation to gain and maintain an erection is lowered.

Is Spedra Effective?

About 60-70% of men gain a firmer and longer-lasting erection. If the treatment does not work, ask our doctors (or your own GP), whether it would be appropriate to increase the dose. Alternatively, they may recommend another treatment.

It may not work for you on your first doses. This is normal. Doctors recommend trying the treatment up to 8 times before seeking out an alternative treatment.

Side Effects

Spedra Side Effects

With any medication you take, there is always a risk of side effects occurring. Some are more common than others, and often side effects may subside with the regular usage of the medicine. If the side effects do not subside, you should report them to us, or your GP. Some of the more common side effects of Spedra include

  • Headaches
  • Flushing
  • Runny/stuffed nose
  • Upset stomach
  • Nausea
  • Red and/or warm skin
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nose bleeds
  • Muscle pain / Back Pain

The side effects listed below are more serious, and you should stop taking Spedra, and report these to your GP immediately.

Directions

Spedra Dosage

The recommended starting dose is Spedra 100mg. Your doctor may decide to start you on a different strength based on factors such as age and weight. It is recommended to use the lowest effective dose as this often produces fewer side effects.

One tablet should be taken 15-30 minutes before sexual activity. If 100mg is too strong, you may break the tablet into a smaller dose.

Avoid grapefruit juice for at least 24 hours before taking this treatment. Grapefruit juice can increase exposure to the medicine resulting in increased side effects.

If the 100mg does not achieve the desired result, you may wish to try the same dose 2-3 more times, before increasing the dosage to Spedra 200mg. If a 200mg dose is ineffective speak to your doctor about alternative treatments.

Different patients will find different medicines more effective. This does not always mean one medicine is better than another, just that your body responds slightly differently to one medicine over another.

Warnings

Do not take Spedra:

  • If you have uncontrolled low or high blood pressure.
  • If you have a serious heart condition
  • If you experience chest pain from angina and take nitrate medicines
  • If you have any allergies to the ingredients listed
  • If you have had a stroke or heart attack in the last 6 months

Spedra cannot be prescribed by our doctor if you are taking nicorandil or nitrate-based medication, such as GTN spray or isosorbide mononitrate tablets for angina.

If you are taking alpha-blocking medicines, such as tamsulosin or trazodone, you are advised to leave at least six hours between taking your alpha-blocker and Spedra.
