What is Trisequens?
Trisequens is a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It is used to help alleviate symptoms associated with the menopause. It can also be used to prevent osteoporosis in women after the menopause.
Trisequens contains two different active ingredients:
- Oestradiol (2mg and 1mg), an oestrogen hormone
- Norethisterone, a progestogen hormone
Trisequens is a type of HRT called continuous sequential HRT or cyclical HRT. This means that the oestrogen is taken every day and the progestogen is taken for 10 days of a 28-day cycle. This generally causes withdrawal bleeds every 4 weeks, whereas another type of HRT called continuous combined HRT does not cause bleeds.
How does it work?
Natural oestrogen levels drop during the menopause. This drop can cause menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, vaginal dryness, sex drive changes, sleep disturbances and mood changes.
Trisequens contains oestrogen which replaces the oestrogen lost during the menopause. By replacing the lost oestrogen, Trisequens alleviates menopausal symptoms.
Taking oestrogens can increase the risk of developing womb cancer. Trisequens contains a progestogen, called norethisterone, which protects against this increased risk. The progestogen in Trisequens is taken for 10 days for every 28 days cycle. Taking it for this duration is enough to mitigate the risk of womb cancer.

FAQ
What is Trisequens used for?
Trisequens is a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It contains an oestrogen and progestogen. It is used to help alleviate symptoms associated with the menopause. It can also be used to prevent osteoporosis in women after the menopause.
How do I stop taking Trisequens?
If you want to stop HRT you should discuss stopping with your doctor. Menopausal symptoms can return after stopping HRT. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) suggests patients can try to stop HRT at regular intervals and test whether their symptoms return. This should be done with the advice of a doctor.
What does hormone replacement do?
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is used to treat menopausal symptoms. HRT replaces hormones that are lost during the menopause like oestrogen and progesterone. Reduced levels of these hormones are associated with menopausal symptoms. By replacing these hormones, HRT helps to improve symptoms.

Side Effects
There is always a risk of side effects when taking any medicine.
Common side effects of Trisequens include:

- Weight gain
- Vaginal inflammation
- Fungal vaginal infection
- Leg cramps
- Nausea
- Weight gain

The patient information leaflet contains a full list of possible side effects.
Women should be aware of the potential risks of HRT before starting therapy. Women taking HRT report the following diseases more often than women who do not take HRT:
- Stroke
- Heart disease
- Ovarian cancer
- Endometrial cancer (the progestogen in Trisequens helps protect against this risk)
- Breast cancer
- Blood clots (venous thromboembolism)
The risk of blood clots in HRT users is up to 3x higher than in non-users. The risk is highest during the first year of treatment.
The risk of having a stroke is about 1.5 times higher in HRT users than in non-users.
The increased risk of breast cancer means that, out of 1000 women using HRT, 4-6 extra women in a 5 year period will be diagnosed with breast cancer compared to non-users of HRT.
HRT users should attend regular checkups with their doctor to monitor treatment efficacy and side effects. The NHS website contains information on the symptoms of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, blood clots and stroke as well as information on the risks of HRT.
