What is Zolmitriptan?

Zolmitriptan tablets have an active ingredient from the group of medicines called triptans. These medicines are used to treat migraines. They are most effective when used quickly, at the first sign of a migraine. In some cases, Zolmitiptan can alleviate the symptoms before they become severe. This may also reduce the need to rely on traditional pain medicines for migraines.

How Zolmitriptan work?

Migraine headaches exact causes are currently not fully known. It’s thought that they are largely related to widening blood vessels in the head. Zolmitriptan is used to treat migraines by causing constriction of the widened blood vessels, returning them back to normal.

Is Zolmitriptan effective?

A study found that triptans relieved headache pain within 2 hours for up to 76% of patients. They will generally work on other symptoms of a migraine attack such as nausea and vomiting and sensitivity to light and sounds.

It is most effective when taken as soon as migraine symptoms are recognised. It will not be effective for preventing migraines if taken before symptoms are present.

Dose

Take one tablet at the first sign of a migraine. You can also take your first dose during the migraine if unable to take it at the first sign. You may repeat the dose after two hours if the migraine is still present or if a migraine returns within 24 hours.

You may take it with or without food as it will not affect absorption.

It is important you do not exceed the dose prescribed to you by your doctor. The maximum dose is 10mg per 24 hours. If exceeded call poison control or a health professional for advice.

What causes a migraine?

The causes of migraines are not well understood. It is thought to involve a change in brain activity. This change can temporarily affect blood vessels, chemical messengers, and nerve signals in the brain.

How long can a migraine last?

What happens during a migraine?

What is the difference between a headache and a migraine?

Generally, a migraine headache is a moderate or severe headache and may be more severe than another type of headache. What are the stages of migraine?

Some people may not go through every stage of migraine. The stages are:

• Pre-headache (prodromal) - causes changes in mood, energy levels, and appetite before other symptoms appear

• Headache stage
• Resolution stage - people often feel tired after the headache and other symptoms resolve

Do not take Zolmitriptan tablets if you:

• Are allergic to the medicine or have had any allergic reactions to triptans
• Have current or previous heart problems such as heart attacks, chest pain (angina), or heart disease
• Have had a stroke
