What is Otomize ear spray?
Otomize is an ear spray that’s used to treat ear infections of the external ear canal, called otitis externa. Otitis externa is often referred to as ‘swimmer’s ear’ because exposure to water can make the ear canal more vulnerable to inflammation.
Otomize contains three active ingredients: dexamethasone, neomycin, and acetic acid. Dexamethasone is a type of medicine called a corticosteroid, neomycin is an antibiotic and acetic acid also helps to fight bacteria.
Otomize is available as a pack size of 5ml.
How does Otomize work?
The three ingredients in Otomize combine to treat otitis externa. Dexamethasone works to reduce any inflammation in the ear canal while the other two ingredients work to kill bacteria that may be causing an infection.
By spraying the solution directly into the ear, it ensures that the medicine works directly at the site of the inflammation and infection.
How to use Otomize
Before using a new bottle of Otomize, shake it well and press the pump down several times until you get a fine spray. Each time the pump is pressed down, one dose will be delivered.
Place the nozzle tip gently into the affected ear and press the pump once to deliver the correct dose. The nozzle tip must always be in place when you use the spray. You can remove it for cleaning but always click it back into place afterwards.
The usual dose is one spray into the affected ear three times a day, unless your doctor has specified otherwise. You should continue to use the spray until 2 days after the symptoms have disappeared. If your condition worsens or doesn’t improve after 7 days, stop using the spray and speak to your doctor for advice.
See the patient information leaflet for further details on using the spray.
Otomize alternatives
Earcalm Spray is an ear spray that contains the active ingredient acetic acid. You can buy it over the counter or online at registered pharmacies. It’s used to treat minor infections of the outer ear. Other prescription ear sprays and drops include Sofradex, Gentisone HC and Betnesol-N.
Sometimes an ear infection may require oral antibiotics such as flucloxacillin or clarithromycin.
Otomize Side Effects
Some people can experience a temporary burning or stinging sensation when using the spray. This usually improves after the first few days of treatment. Some people may also experience a sensitivity reaction such as irritation or a rash. If you experience sensitivity reactions, contact your doctor or pharmacist for medical advice.
