What is Otomize ear spray?
Otomize is an ear spray that’s used to treat ear infections of the external ear canal, called otitis externa. Otitis externa is often referred to as ‘swimmer’s ear’ because exposure to water can make the ear canal more vulnerable to inflammation.
Otomize contains three active ingredients: dexamethasone, neomycin, and acetic acid. Dexamethasone is a type of medicine called a corticosteroid, neomycin is an antibiotic and acetic acid also helps to fight bacteria.
Otomize is available as a pack size of 5ml.
How does Otomize work?
The three ingredients in Otomize combine to treat otitis externa. Dexamethasone works to reduce any inflammation in the ear canal while the other two ingredients work to kill bacteria that may be causing an infection.
By spraying the solution directly into the ear, it ensures that the medicine works directly at the site of the inflammation and infection.
How to use Otomize
Before using a new bottle of Otomize, shake it well and press the pump down several times until you get a fine spray. Each time the pump is pressed down, one dose will be delivered.
Place the nozzle tip gently into the affected ear and press the pump once to deliver the correct dose. The nozzle tip must always be in place when you use the spray. You can remove it for cleaning but always click it back into place afterwards.
The usual dose is one spray into the affected ear three times a day, unless your doctor has specified otherwise. You should continue to use the spray until 2 days after the symptoms have disappeared. If your condition worsens or doesn’t improve after 7 days, stop using the spray and speak to your doctor for advice.
See the patient information leaflet for further details on using the spray.
Earcalm Spray is an ear spray that contains the active ingredient acetic acid. You can buy it over the counter or online at registered pharmacies. It’s used to treat minor infections of the outer ear. Other prescription ear sprays and drops include Sofradex, Gentisone HC and Betnesol-N.
Sometimes an ear infection may require oral antibiotics such as flucloxacillin or clarithromycin.
Otomize Side Effects
Some people can experience a temporary burning or stinging sensation when using the spray. This usually improves after the first few days of treatment. Some people may also experience a sensitivity reaction such as irritation or a rash. If you experience sensitivity reactions, contact your doctor or pharmacist for medical advice.
See section 4 of the patient information leaflet for further information.
How long does it take Otomize Ear Spray to work?
Symptoms should have improved after 7 days of using the spray. You should continue to use Otomize until two days after symptoms have gone. If there is no improvement after 7 days, you should contact your doctor for medical advice.

Otomize Ear Spray is used to treat infection and inflammation of the external ear canal. The condition is medically known as otitis externa.
Is Otomize Ear Spray a steroid?
The spray contains three active ingredients. One of these, dexamethasone, is a type of corticosteroid. This means that Otomize spray does contain a steroid ingredient.
Does Otomize Ear Spray get rid of wax?
Otomize is used to treat otitis externa and should not be used to get rid of wax. Other treatments are available to treat and remove ear wax such as Otex Ear Drops, Otex Express Ear Drops, Exterol Ear Drops and Olive Oil Ear Drops.
Is Earcalm the same as Otomize?
These products are not the same. Earcalm contains acetic acid 2% and can be bought over the counter or online at registered pharmacies. Otomize contains acetic acid, dexamethasone and neomycin and is a prescription-only medicine. This means you cannot buy Otomize Ear Spray at Boots.
Can you buy Otomize Ear Spray over the counter?
Otomize, in the UK, is a prescription-only medicine that cannot be bought over the counter. This means you cannot buy Otomize Ear Spray at Tesco or Otomize Ear Spray at Amazon. It can only be dispensed with a prescription from a UK registered pharmacy. You can buy Otomize online from UK registered online doctor services like Simple Online Pharmacy.
Simply complete an online consultation for our doctors to review. If suitable, your order will be dispensed and dispatched by our online pharmacy team.
Before taking any medication, it is important to read the Patient Information Leaflet. You can find information leaflets for your medicines by typing them into the search bar at medicines.org, or by contacting us.
If you are allergic to dexamethasone, acetic acid, neomycin or any of the other ingredients, you should not use this medicine. It should also not be used if the affected ear has a perforated eardrum or is fitted with a grommet. Otomize Ear Spray should only ever be applied to the ear and not to other areas of the body.
