Norethisterone is a medication that is used to delay your period. It interferes with the hormone that triggers the start of your period; it does not have any effect upon conception. You will typically begin taking the tablets three days before your period is due to start. As directed, you should take three pills a day, each containing 5mg of Norethisterone.

What are the side effects of Norethisterone?

Most people who take Norethisterone (brand name Utovlan) do not experience any side effects. But if you do experience any, you should speak to your doctor. The most commonly reported side effects – which are still rare, however – are associated with an allergic reaction. These side effects are facial swelling, increased blood pressure, jaundice (yellowing of the skin) and blood clots. An allergic reaction could lead to death, so it is vital to seek medical attention if you experience any side effects.

Other side effects include: dizziness, nausea, headaches, sex drive changes, breast tenderness, ovarian cysts, mood changes, drowsiness and changes in vision.

Can I take Norethisterone?

Most healthy women will be able to take Norethisterone; however, if you have certain conditions, it can exclude you from the treatment. If you have high blood pressure, hormonal imbalances, varicose veins, heart problems, asthma, kidney problems or risk of blood clots, you may not be able to take this drug. Norethisterone can increase your risk of blood clots, so if you are already at an increased risk of blood clots (if you smoke or have high blood pressure, for example), you will not be prescribed Norethisterone. A family history of breast cancer or a prior diagnosis of depression, may also prevent you from taking Norethisterone. If you have any of the above conditions preventing you from taking Norethisterone, there may be alternative ways available to delay your period. Be open and honest with your doctor, and they will decide on the best appropriate medication for you!
