What Is Rabeprazole?
Rabeprazole is a medicine used to treat a number of conditions. It is used to treat stomach ulcers, oesophagitis, acid reflux and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It can also be used to treat long term acid reflux, known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
How Does Rabeprazole Work?
Acid reflux describes the movement of stomach acid up the oesophagus towards the throat. This movement of acid can cause symptoms such as a sour taste in the mouth, heartburn, bloating, and hiccups.
Proton pumps are located in the stomach and produce acid to help break down food. Rabeprazole works against the proton pumps to stop them producing acid. This helps to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach and helps to improve acid reflux symptoms.
The tablets are gastro-resistant which helps them to have a delayed-release to be more effective. The active ingredient is Rabeprazole sodium.
Two strengths are available, Rabeprazole 10 mg tablets and Rabeprazole 20 mg tablets. You should take the tablets exactly as your doctor has told you to. The usual dose for acid reflux is 10mg once a day but you may be prescribed a higher dose by your doctor.
If you take it once daily, ideally you should take your dose in the morning.
A variety of medicines can be used to treat acid reflux. Other prescription medicines include different PPIs such as Esomeprazole and Pantoprazole. Over the counter treatments are also available such as Rennie, Peptac, and Gaviscon. These are effective treatments for acid reflux but they work in a different way to PPIs.
Acid reflux can be managed effectively with lifestyle tips. This includes drinking less alcohol and stopping smoking, avoiding trigger foods, and losing weight if you are overweight. Raising the head of your bed can also be useful to keep your chest higher than your stomach whilst you sleep.
What are Rabeprazole sodium tablets 20mg used for?
Rabeprazole is used to treat acid reflux symptoms. It can also be used to treat a number of other conditions such as gastric ulcers and oesophagitis.
What are the side effects of Rabeprazole?
For a full list of Rabeprazole side effects, see the patient information leaflet. Common side effects include stomach pain, dizziness, headaches, constipation and diarrhoea. For a list of more serious, but rare, side effects, see the patient information leaflet.
There can be other, more serious side effects with Rabeprazole but these are rare. If you notice a severe rash with joint pain this may be a serious side effect and you should seek medical attention immediately. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction after taking it, seek medical attention immediately.
Is Rabeprazole better than Omeprazole?
This varies from patient to patient. One may be more effective for one person, while the other is more effective for someone else. There are many different types of PPIs and if you find one is not effective for you, your doctor may prescribe another.
How to take Rabeprazole?
The dose of Rabeprazole depends on what condition it is treating. Usually, the dose for acid reflux is one 10mg tablet once a day. However, you should always take it exactly as your doctor has told you to.
Does Rabeprazole contain ranitidine?
Rabeprazole does not contain ranitidine. Ranitidine is another type of medicine for acid reflux and indigestion. Ranitidine is known as an H2 antagonist and works in a different way to PPI medication. There have been supply issues with ranitidine recently and it is not currently available in the UK.
Can I buy Rabeprazole over the counter?
Rabeprazole is a prescription-only medicine which means it is not available to buy over the counter. Another PPI, called Esomeprazole, is available at lower strengths over the counter. The over the counter version is called Nexium Control.
You can request to order Rabeprazole from our UK registered online doctor and pharmacy service. We ask that you complete a medical questionnaire as part of your order. This helps our doctors to make sure it is safe and suitable to prescribe for you.
If approved by the doctor, a prescription is sent to our pharmacy team. From there, it is dispensed and dispatched to your address.
