What Is Rabeprazole?
Rabeprazole is a medicine used to treat a number of conditions. It is used to treat stomach ulcers, oesophagitis, acid reflux and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It can also be used to treat long term acid reflux, known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
It belongs to the family of medicines called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). These are commonly used to treat acid reflux and other conditions. Examples of other PPIs are Omeprazole and Pantoprazole.
How Does Rabeprazole Work?
Acid reflux describes the movement of stomach acid up the oesophagus towards the throat. This movement of acid can cause symptoms such as a sour taste in the mouth, heartburn, bloating, and hiccups.
Proton pumps are located in the stomach and produce acid to help break down food. Rabeprazole works against the proton pumps to stop them producing acid. This helps to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach and helps to improve acid reflux symptoms.
The tablets are gastro-resistant which helps them to have a delayed-release to be more effective. The active ingredient is Rabeprazole sodium.
Rabeprazole Dosage
Two strengths are available, Rabeprazole 10 mg tablets and Rabeprazole 20 mg tablets. You should take the tablets exactly as your doctor has told you to. The usual dose for acid reflux is 10mg once a day but you may be prescribed a higher dose by your doctor.
If you take it once daily, ideally you should take your dose in the morning.
Rabeprazole Alternatives
A variety of medicines can be used to treat acid reflux. Other prescription medicines include different PPIs such as Esomeprazole and Pantoprazole. Over the counter treatments are also available such as Rennie, Peptac, and Gaviscon. These are effective treatments for acid reflux but they work in a different way to PPIs.
Acid reflux can be managed effectively with lifestyle tips. This includes drinking less alcohol and stopping smoking, avoiding trigger foods, and losing weight if you are overweight. Raising the head of your bed can also be useful to keep your chest higher than your stomach whilst you sleep.
