About Salamol Inhalers
Both Salamol inhalers contain the active ingredient salbutamol used to relieve the symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The Salamol CFC free inhaler is a better value generic version of Ventolin. The Salamol Easi Breathe inhaler is similar but uses a different type of inhaler device which makes it easier to use. We also stock other salbutamol reliever inhalers such as Ventolin and generic Salbutamol inhaler.
Salamol CFC free inhalers are the standard press and breathe inhalers. This requires a degree of coordination and timing to use. Salamol Easi-Breathe is one of the easier inhalers to use, as it is what is known as a breath-actuated inhaler. The inhaler triggers as you breathe in, which means that you do not need to coordinate pressing and then breathing like other inhalers. This allows people with difficulty coordinating the regular inhalers to get a high dose into the deep lungs where it is most effective.
Nonetheless, it is important to review your inhaler technique regularly and make sure you are using the device correctly. Failure to do this may mean you are not getting the full benefit of your inhaler.
Both versions of Salamol inhalers contain 200 metered doses.
How do Salamol inhalers work?
Salamol contains the active ingredient salbutamol which is known as a beta-agonist which is a bronchodilator. What this means is salbutamol works by relaxing the muscles of the airways in the lungs. This opens the airways relieving breathing problems due to constriction of the airways such as asthma.
This is a type of inhaler called a ‘reliever’ inhaler. These are used to improve asthma symptoms, like shortness of breath and wheezing. They are useful to improve symptoms in the short term.
However, another type of inhaler called a ‘preventer’ inhaler, should also be part of your treatment. These contain steroid medication that help to reduce the inflammation in the airways and reduce the risk of asthma attacks.
How to use Salamol Inhalers
Standard Salamol pressurised metered-dose inhalers are to be shaken well before use and primed if needed. Exhale and place the inhaler between your lips and press the inhaler canister to deliver the dose while you breathe in.
Salamol Easi-Breathe is designed to be simple to use. To use the inhaler, hold the mouthpiece between your lips and breathe in slowly and deeply.
Don’t stop breathing when the dose is puffed into your mouth. Carry on until you have taken a deep breath. After this, you should take the inhaler out of your mouth and hold your breath for as long as you comfortably can.
Dose exactly how your doctor has directed you based on the severity of the attack and your asthma action plan. If you do not have an asthma action plan, consider creating one with your regular doctor.
For more detailed directions, you can see a video demonstration for Salamol CFC free inhalers and Easi breath inhalers from Asthma UK or see the patient information leaflet.

Warnings
Warnings
Salamol is an effective inhaler to treat asthma symptoms like shortness of breath and wheezing. However, if you have been prescribed a steroid inhaler by your doctor, it is important that you use it. Salamol will not improve your asthma in the long term, whereas steroid inhalers help to reduce inflammation in the lungs and improve your asthma symptoms over a long period of time.
If you notice your symptoms worsening, or you use your Salamol reliever inhaler more often, you should speak to your doctor. Needing to use your reliever inhaler more often is a sign that your asthma is not controlled. This can be due to other medicines including some blood pressure medicines, weather or a general worsening of your condition. See the NHS website for further information.
