What is Rizatriptan?
Rizatriptan is used to treat migraine attacks. It belongs to a family of medicines known as Triptans which are used as migraine treatments The symptoms of a migraine are generally strong headache pain, nausea & vomiting, and light sensitivity.
How does Rizatriptan work?
Migraine headaches do not have an exact known cause, but it’s thought likely that they are due to blood vessels widening in the head. To counteract this the medicine narrows the blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow normally, allowing the migraine to pass quickly.
Is Rizatriptan effective?
The medicine is effective if used to treat the headache phase of a migraine attack in 76% of patients according to a study.
It should not be and will not work for the prevention of a migraine.
How to use Rizatriptan Tablets?
Take one tablet (10mg) at the first sign a migraine headache has started.
If your migraine persists you may take a 2nd dose after two hours. If your migraine returns within 24 hours you may take another dose, however always leave at least 2 hours between doses. Do not take more than 2 doses within a 24-hour period.
If the medicine does not work for you, it is best to discuss your options with your doctor.
If the condition worsens you should seek medical attention.

Warnings
Do not take Rizatriptan if:
- You have an allergy to any ingredient or have had an allergic reaction to a Triptan previously
- You have had a heart attack or heart problems such as angina (chest pain)
- You have uncontrolled high blood pressure
- You have severe liver or kidney problems
- You have had a stroke or mini-stroke
- You are taking MAOI antidepressants
- You are taking other migraine treatments of the same family
Using the medicine too often may lead to a medication overuse headache. This is a chronic headache that may result in you being required to stop treatment. Speak to your doctor if you suspect you may be experiencing this.
There are no special storage requirements for the medicine and it may be stored at room temperature.
