How does Mebeverine work?
Mebeverine 135mg is a treatment for the medical condition Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). This is the active ingredient in the well known IBS medication Colofac. It belongs to a group of medicines called anticholinergics.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome can cause spasms and pain in the gut and intestines. Mebeverine tablets work by relaxing the muscles in and around the gut to relieve these spasms. By doing so, it can provide relief from the pain and cramping caused by the spasms.
It is a well-tolerated medication which is used extensively in the treatment of IBS. The branded version is called Colofac.
How do you take Mebeverine?
The usual recommended Mebeverine dose is one tablet three times a day, but your doctor may advise you to take less. Tablets should be swallowed with a glassful of water and ideally taken about 20 minutes before a meal.
Mebeverine is also available as modified-release capsules. These are usually taken twice daily.
Alternatives to Mebeverine
There are many treatments available for IBS. Other treatments include:
- Colpermin (peppermint oil)
- Fybogel Mebeverine
Apart from cramps and stomach pain, IBS can also cause symptoms like diarrhoea and constipation. Anti-diarrhoea medication, like Imodium, can be useful when your IBS causes diarrhoea. Likewise, laxatives such as Fybogel can help to improve constipation symptoms.
For more advice on treatments for different symptoms of IBS, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
