What is Fucidin H Cream?

Fucidin H cream contains two active ingredients. One is a steroid called hydrocortisone and the other is an antibiotic called fusidic acid. It is used to treat skin conditions with inflammation, like eczema, that have become infected with bacteria.

It contains fusidic acid 2% and hydrocortisone 1%. Hydrocortisone is considered to be a mild topical steroid. Fusidic acid is also known as sodium fusidate.

How does it work?

With an eczema flare up the skin barrier is damaged and the skin can become inflamed, swollen, and itchy. A flare-up also causes the skin to become broken and cracked and this makes it easier for bacteria to enter the skin and cause an infection. Signs of infected eczema include weeping skin, a crust on the surface of the skin, and fever.

The two ingredients help in different ways to treat an infected eczema flare-up. Hydrocortisone is a type of medicine called a corticosteroid. These are used to treat the usual symptoms of eczema such as inflammation, swelling, and itching.

Fusidic acid is an antibiotic ingredient. This treats the infection by killing the bacteria causing the infection.

Applying the cream

Your doctor will tell you exactly how to apply the cream. Usually it is applied to the affected area twice a day but your doctor may advise to use it differently. It is not recommended to use for more than two weeks but your doctor may advise stopping it sooner than that. If there is no improvement after 7 days of using it, you should consult your doctor.

When applying the cream, using fingertip units can be a useful guide. Squeeze the cream from the tube onto your index finger from the tip to the first joint of the finger. This counts as one fingertip unit.
You can see section 3 of the patient information leaflet as a guide of how many fingertip units to use for different parts of the body. If your doctor has advised you differently, follow your doctor’s advice.

Side Effects

Fucidin H Side Effects

When using any medicine, if you have signs of an allergic reaction you should seek medical attention immediately. This includes difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, and a severe skin rash.

The most common Fucidin H side effect is burning, itching, or stinging of the skin it is applied to. Other side effects are less common but topical steroids like hydrocortisone can cause serious side effects if they are used incorrectly. Using Fucidin H for a long period of time or applying too much cream increases the likelihood of side effects. Covering the skin with a dressing also increases the risk of side effects.
