What is Regaine?
Regaine is a clinically proven hair loss treatment for men, containing the active ingredient Minoxidil. Regaine For Men is in an Extra Strength formulation that contains 5% Minoxidil. It comes in a variety of sizes and forms including Regain Foam and Regaine solution. Each will have the same clinical effect, only differing in how they feel on the scalp.
It has been proven to prevent men from losing their hair and/or help with hair regrowth in 8 out of 10 men who use it. A percentage of those begin to notice a regrowth of hair. This makes it the trusted treatment choice of over 5 million people worldwide. Regaine Extra Strength Foam contains minoxidil 5% and is designed for men who want faster results in comparison to the normal strength.
- It has been shown to re-grow some hair in 3 out of 5 men
- Results usually appear after 8-12 weeks of use.
What is hair loss?
During a normal day, people can lose between 50 and 100 hairs from their scalp. It is hard to notice this because new hair is always growing and replacing the hair we lose. Hair loss happens when the new hair cannot replace the hair that falls out. The medical term for hair loss is alopecia.
The most common cause of hair loss in men is called androgenetic alopecia (also called androgenic alopecia). In men, it is known as male pattern baldness or male pattern hair loss. It becomes more common with increasing age and it will affect about 80% of men over their lifetime. While hair loss in men aged over 40 is more common, it can begin as early as the late teens or 20s.
Male pattern hair loss is due to a combination of hormones, called androgens, and genetics. If you have a family history of hair loss, you may be more likely to carry genes that put you at risk of experiencing hair loss. This is why the age it starts for each man can vary so drastically.
Male pattern baldness usually starts with hair loss at the front and sides of the scalp which progresses towards the back of the head. If you find you have sudden, patchy hair loss or more hair loss than usual, speak to your GP. There may be other conditions associated with your hair loss.
How does it work?
The active ingredient in Regaine is minoxidil.
It is believed to work by increasing the supply of blood and nutrients to the hair follicle. This helps strengthen existing hair and in some cases can stimulate secondary growth. It is thought to reverse the hair loss process by increasing the diameter of the hair shaft. It is also thought to stimulate and prolong the ‘growth’ phase of hairs.
In the early stages of Regaine use it stimulates the follicle to moe into the growth phase, causing old hairs to fall out, making way for new thicker hairs – so don't worry if hair loss increases for a very short time at first.
How long does Regaine take to work?
Hair regrowth may occur as early as 8 weeks after starting Regaine. This can vary from person to person and it can take up to 16 weeks to get visible results for hair loss. Progression of hair loss before treatment is a factor in how successful treatment may be. Catching hair loss early with treatment will usually allow for faster and stronger results.
How to use Regaine Extra Strength
Regaine is for external use only and should only be applied to the scalp area. Before applying it, make sure that your scalp and hair are completely dry.
Press the nozzle to dispense about 1mL of solution or about half a capful of foam. Massage the solution or foam into the affected areas of your scalp twice a day. Allow the solution or foam to dry on the scalp, do not wash the treatment off as it is designed to be left on to absorb and work. Doses should be spaced about 12 hours apart.
It should be applied twice daily for at least 8 weeks before results can be seen. You should use Regaine for 4 months, to see if it will work for you. If it is working, you should continue to use Regaine if you want to keep noticing results.
Always wash your hands before and after applying Regaine hair loss treatment to your scalp.

Alternative treatments
Regaine may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with sensitive skin or skin conditions which make topical, on scalp hair loss treatments not recommended such as eczema and dermatitis. It is best to seek advice from your doctor before starting any alternative treatment. Tablet treatments such as Propecia (original) and Finasteride (generic) are prescription tablets for hair loss available after consulting our online doctors.
Regaine (minoxidil) and finasteride can be used in combination for hair loss as they work in two different ways, although together they may not be suitable for everyone.
Regaine for women
Regaine extra strength is not suitable for women, however Regaine women regular strength (2% minoxidil) is suitable for use for women. Women once a day scalp foam (5% minoxidil) is also available for women to use however unlike men’s Regaine twice daily application, women need only apply it once per day.
Regaine side effects
As with any medicine, Regaine may cause side effects for some people. The most common side effect of Regaine foam is headaches. Other common side effects include itching, slight irritation and unwanted hair growth in non-scalp areas. This may be a result of not washing your hands after applying the foam and the foam may be transferred to other parts of the body.
See the patient information leaflet to see detailed information about side effects. If you notice any side effects when using it, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
