What is Trosyl Nail Solution?
Trosyl Nail Solution is an antifungal solution used to treat fungal nail infections affecting the fingernails or toenails. It is applied to the affected nail(s) every 12 hours using a brush. It should be used continuously. Treatment usually takes 6 months or longer to completely clear the infection.
Trosyl contains the active ingredient tioconazole, which is an antifungal medicine.
How does it work?
Fungal nail infections happen when a fungus affects any part of the nail. As the fungal infection progresses, the infected nail might change colour or shape and thicken. It can affect fingernails and toenails, however, toenails are 7 times more likely to be affected.
Trosyl contains an antifungal that works by killing the fungus affecting the nail(s). This helps to clear the infection while allowing healthy nail to eventually grow back. This can take a long time and the duration of treatment is usually 6 months but can be extended to 12 months.
How to use Trosyl
You should use it exactly as your doctor has told you to. Apply the nail solution thinly, with the provided brush, to cover the entire affected nail and surrounding skin. You should let the solution dry for 10-15 minutes after applying the solution.
The solution will dry on the treated nails and leave a slightly greasy, transparent film on the nail. This film contains the antifungal which will slowly pass through the nail to work against the fungal infection. You should leave the film intact for as long as possible, for it to have a maximum effect. Water doesn’t remove the film, but soapy water or detergent does.
Side Effects
Trosyl is usually well tolerated by patients using it, however, there is a possibility of experiencing side effects. Swelling of the hands or feet is a common side effect, meaning up to 1 in 10 people may experience this. It can also cause a rash or skin irritation in some people. This is usually mild and often happens in the first week of treatment.
See the patient information leaflet for a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, like itching or blistering of the skin, seek medical advice immediately.
Alternative treatments
Treatment for fungal nail infections can take a long time. Trosyl is applied every 12 hours, usually for 6-12 months. Some people may find it inconvenient when using it for such a long time. Other treatments may be more convenient.
For example, Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer (or the branded version Loceryl) can also be prescribed to treat infections. These may be more convenient because the nail lacquer only needs to be applied once or twice a week, rather than twice a day like Trosyl. With Amorolfine, fingernails should clear after around 6 months of use and toenails should clear after around 9-12 months of use.
If topical treatments like Amorolfine or Trosyl do not clear the infection, inform your doctor. Your doctor may prescribe oral antifungal tablets called terbinafine. The usual dose is to take one tablet every day for 6 weeks - 3 months for fingernails and 3-6 months for toenails.
