What is Foundayo (orforglipron)?
Released shortly after the Wegovy pill, Foundayo (orforglipron) is a once-daily weight loss pill made by Eli Lilly. The US medicines regulator 9 (FDA) approved Foundayo on 1 April 2026. The approval covers adults with obesity or adults who are overweight with at least one weight-related health problem.
Foundayo is the second oral GLP-1 medication to reach the US market, arriving a few months after Wegovy tablets launched in early 2026. However, the Wegovy pill has been the first to receive MHRA approval for sale in the UK.
The Wegovy pill and Foundayo are both GLP-1 receptor agonists. These are medications that copy a gut hormone (GLP-1), which controls hunger and digestion. They differ in absorption and dosing. They also produce different levels of weight loss.
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in oral Wegovy. Novo Nordisk makes semaglutide from a peptide (small protein). Peptides break down in stomach acid, so Wegovy tablets require a protective coating to get the drug into your bloodstream.
Orforglipron is a small molecule that does not rely on the same protection. The Wegovy pill needs to be taken on an empty stomach. Orforglipron does not.
Foundayo starts at 0.8mg. It moves through higher doses over several months, up to 17.2mg. Orforglipron 36mg capsules were used during trials, but the approved 17.2mg tablet delivers the same amount of drug.
Eli Lilly changed how the medication was formulated between the trial and its approval. The Wegovy pill also starts low, at 1.5mg, and increases monthly to a maintenance dose of 25mg.
Both GLP-1 medications carry a boxed warning about thyroid tumours. Do not take either tablet if you or a close family member has a history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or a condition called multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2).
Wegovy pill vs Foundayo: what does the evidence show?
The Wegovy pill produced greater weight loss in clinical trials. In OASIS 4, people taking the Wegovy pill lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks. In ATTAIN-1, those on the highest dose of Foundayo (36mg) lost 11.2% over 72 weeks. In practical terms, someone weighing 100kg could expect to lose roughly 2.4kg more on the Wegovy pill than on Foundayo.
No direct trial has compared Foundayo and Wegovy pill results head-to-head. The closest available data comes from the ORION study, where researchers compared results from each drug’s separate clinical trial.
ORION found the Wegovy pill produced around 3 percentage points more weight loss than Foundayo. Fewer people stopped taking Wegovy tablets because of side effects. People on Foundayo were roughly 14 times more likely to stop because of stomach and gut problems. The comparison has limits, but the data consistently favoured the oral Wegovy.
In a Novo Nordisk-sponsored survey, 800 adults with obesity compared descriptions of each pill’s benefits and side effects. 84% preferred the Wegovy pill based on the results described.
Which pill produces more weight loss?
The Wegovy pill. People taking the Wegovy pill lost more weight on average in clinical trials. When researchers compared the two drugs using data from both trials, the Wegovy pill still came out ahead.
Does Foundayo have an advantage over the Wegovy pill?
Foundayo has one clear advantage: no fasting rules. You can take it any time of day, with or without food, with no water restrictions. You take the Wegovy daily pill on an empty stomach with no more than 120 ml of plain water. Then wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking.
The Wegovy tablet has a special coating called SNAC that protects the drug from stomach acid. This coating only works on an empty stomach, which is why the fasting rules exist. Foundayo does not need this coating. If the Wegovy pill’s timing rules are a problem for you, Foundayo removes that issue.
Can you take Foundayo with food?
Yes. Foundayo can be taken with or without food at any time of day. The Wegovy pill cannot. When weighing Foundayo vs Wegovy pill, the freedom to eat and drink at any time is Foundayo’s main practical advantage.
Is Foundayo available in the UK?
Foundayo is not available in the UK as of April 2026. The US regulator (FDA) has approved it. The UK regulator (MHRA) has not. Eli Lilly has not said when it will apply for UK approval, but it is unlikely before 2027.
Private prescribers cannot supply Foundayo until the MHRA gives approval. But before the NHS can offer Foundayo, two things need to happen. First, the MHRA needs to approve it for use. Then NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) needs to decide whether the NHS should cover it.
Any website claiming to sell Foundayo in the UK right now is not doing so legally. Do not purchase any unlicensed weight loss medication online. Counterfeit medicines can be useless at best and dangerous at worst. For anyone looking for an oral GLP-1 option now, oral Wegovy is likely to reach the UK first.

Why does this comparison matter?
As Foundayo reaches more countries, more people are asking how the orforglipron pill vs Wegovy pill compare. If you are making a weight management decision now, the Wegovy pill has two advantages beyond the trial data. Not only was it first to market, but it also has a longer safety record.
The same active ingredient and the same SNAC coating have been used in a diabetes tablet called Rybelsus since 2020. So prescribers have over five years of long-term safety data for the same drug.
Foundayo is a newer drug with less long-term data behind it. The ORION data points to better results with the Wegovy pill, but it was not a direct comparison.
It used results from two separate trials with different designs and different patients. A study testing both pills side by side would give a clearer answer. Until that happens, the current evidence favours the Wegovy pill.
Oral Wegovy is the proven oral option for patients who want to start treatment now. If a daily tablet would work better for you than weekly injections, the Wegovy pill has the best evidence for weight loss today.
When should I see a doctor?
Speak to our prescribing team to know which weight loss option suits your medical history.
Contact us urgently if you experience any of the following while taking any GLP-1 medication:
- Severe or persistent vomiting that does not settle. Dehydration from vomiting can lead to kidney problems.
- Intense stomach pain that spreads to your back. This could be a sign of pancreatitis.
- Swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing. These are signs of a serious allergic reaction. Dial 999.
- A lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing. Report these to your GP promptly.
- Any changes to your vision – this may be a sign of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), and requires immediate attention.
Do not use weight loss medications that have not been approved by the MHRA for use in the UK. If you have seen Foundayo (or orforglipron) advertised online, speak to us before ordering anything.
Key takeaways
- The Wegovy pill (semaglutide, Novo Nordisk) and Foundayo (orforglipron, Eli Lilly) are both oral GLP-1 receptor agonists used for weight management.
- Weight loss in clinical trials: 13.6% over 64 weeks for the Wegovy pill vs 11.2% over 72 weeks for Foundayo at its highest dose.
- ORION indirect comparison data show better weight loss results with the Wegovy pill. People on Foundayo were also more likely to stop treatment because of side effects.
- Foundayo can be taken with food at any time of day. The Wegovy pill must be taken on an empty stomach. Foundayo’s main advantage is convenience, not efficacy.
- Foundayo is FDA-approved in the US. It has not been submitted to the MHRA and is not available in the UK. UK availability is unlikely before 2027.
