Does the Wegovy pill work?

Yes, adults taking the 25mg Wegovy pill lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks. On placebo (an inactive pill given for comparison purposes), the figure was 2.2%. The active ingredient is semaglutide, the same molecule used in the weekly Wegovy injection. It reduces appetite and slows how quickly your stomach empties, so you feel less interested in food and feel full more quickly after eating.

The evidence behind those figures is the OASIS 4 clinical trial. It followed 307 adults with obesity or who were overweight for 64 weeks. Two-thirds received the daily 25mg pill, one-third placebo. Everyone got the same lifestyle support around diet and increased physical activity.

A second look at the OASIS 4 data counted only people who stayed on the pill throughout. Average weight loss in that group reached 16.6%. The 13.6% figure counts everyone in the trial, including people who stopped early or missed doses. This makes it a more realistic number.

The FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) approved the Wegovy pill in December 2025. Novo Nordisk used the OASIS 4 data to support the application.

The FDA also approved the pill for reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from heart disease. That approval applies to adults who are overweight or have obesity who already have heart disease. The evidence comes from the SELECT trial of injectable Wegovy.

SELECT followed over 17,600 adults with existing heart disease who were overweight or had obesity for roughly three years. People taking semaglutide had about a 20% lower risk of a repeated major cardiovascular event — heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes — compared with placebo.

The MHRA has not yet approved oral Wegovy in the UK. A decision is expected by late 2026. For now, the only oral semaglutide licensed in the UK is Rybelsus, which treats type 2 diabetes, not weight loss.

How much weight can you lose on the Wegovy pill?

The average Wegovy pill weight loss results from OASIS 4 was 13.6%, but not everyone loses the same amount. Participants didn’t rely on medication alone — they also received standard advice to follow a healthy eating plan and increase physical activity while taking the study treatment

Some lost over 20% of their body weight, while others struggled to lose weight. This sort of spread is common with any weight loss drug in this class. For someone weighing 100kg at the start, on average, they would lose roughly 14kg by week 64.

About three in ten people on the pill lost 20% or more, compared with around three in a hundred on placebo. At the other end, roughly three-quarters lost at least 5%, enough for blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and cholesterol to start improving.

People on the pill were also significantly more likely to reach 10% and 15% weight loss than those on placebo. Losing 15% of your body weight may mean you can reverse prediabetes and take measurable pressure off the heart and joints, and improve overall health.

How does the Wegovy pill compare to other trials?

The weight loss results from the four large Wegovy Pill clinical trials came out strikingly close. OASIS 4 tested the 25mg daily pill, OASIS 1 a higher 50mg pill, and STEP 1 the 2.4mg weekly injection. These trials ran for around 64 to 68 weeks in similar groups of people, aside from the STEP UP trial, which ran for 72 weeks.

TrialDose and routeDurationAverage weight loss
OASIS 425mg daily pill64 weeks13.6%
OASIS 150mg daily pill68 weeks15.1%
STEP 12.4mg weekly injection68 weeks14.9%
STEP UP7.2mg weekly injection72 weeks18.7%

Less than 1% of the semaglutide in each pill actually reaches your bloodstream. That is why the pill dose is 25mg while the injection is just 2.4mg. The pill and injection have similar weight loss averages.

Wegovy pill efficacy in OASIS 4 did not depend on how much someone weighed at the start. Blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol all improved alongside the weight loss in people on the pill.

Both oral Wegovy trials excluded people with type 2 diabetes. If you have diabetes alongside your weight, the results may not apply directly to you.

How long does it take for the Wegovy pill to show results?

Most people on the Wegovy pill notice appetite changes within the first two to three weeks, but meaningful weight loss takes longer. Weight loss in OASIS 4 began during the dose-escalation phase and was substantial by month 4. The biggest losses came between months 3 and 10, after people reached the full 25mg dose. After that, the rate slowed. Most people’s Wegovy pill results month by month levelled off towards week 64.

Your body takes about four to five weeks to adjust after each dose increase, which is why we spread the steps out. How long the Wegovy pill takes to work can vary from person to person. The best way to give it a chance to work well is to take it exactly as prescribed.

Follow the fasting instructions carefully when you take your tablet, and keep building healthy habits alongside it. This means a balanced diet and regular movement or exercise.

What affects how well the Wegovy pill works?

Three things shape how well the Wegovy pill works: the fasting rules, your lifestyle changes, and your own biology. The Wegovy pill has stricter dosing rules than any other GLP-1 medication. Getting them wrong is a common reason people absorb less of the drug than expected.

You must swallow the Wegovy tablet whole, first thing in the morning. Take the tablet with no more than 120ml of plain water, on a completely empty stomach. Once you have taken the tablet, you will need to wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.

With a weekly injection, being a few hours late makes little difference. With the daily pill, having coffee too soon or eating within 30 minutes can stop the dose working properly.

As in most GLP-1 trials, OASIS 4 combined the pill with dietary changes and increased physical activity. The 13.6% average is what the pill added on top of those changes, not what it did alone.

Not everyone responds the same way, and not everyone reaches the full 25mg dose. Nausea during the early dose increases can limit how far some people go. If you are not losing weight on the Wegovy pill, the most common reasons are fasting mistakes leading to poor absorption.

NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) recommends stopping treatment if you have not lost at least 5% of your initial body weight after six months on the highest dose you can manage.

Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the injection?

The Wegovy pill and the weekly injection produced similar weight loss in clinical trials. OASIS 4 reported 13.6% with the 25mg daily pill, while STEP 1 reported 14.9% with the 2.4mg weekly injection. A gap of just 1.3 percentage points.

No trial has tested the two against each other directly. Those figures come from separate studies with similar but not identical groups of people. Even so, the results ended up close enough that the difference is unlikely to matter for most people.

The main difference is practical rather than medical. Weight loss injections like Wegovy are once a week, with no food or timing rules. The daily pill requires a strict fasting routine that starts the moment you wake up. The pill’s effectiveness only comes close to the injection if you follow the fasting rules closely.

The choice between the Wegovy pill vs the injection is simple. Do you prefer a daily fasting routine, or a weekly jab with no timing rules?

A higher 7.2mg weekly injection (Wegovy HD) is also available in the UK. The dose is for people who have been on the 2.4mg dose for at least four weeks and want more weight loss. In the STEP UP trial, average weight loss with the higher dose reached 18.7% over 72 weeks. That widens the gap between the injection and the pill for people who can tolerate the step up.

The pill and injection are now two ways of taking the same weight loss medication in the UK. The MHRA licensed the 2.4mg injection for weight loss in 2023 and the higher 7.2mg dose in January 2026. The pill remains under MHRA review. If you are considering treatment now, how effective Wegovy is for weight loss in injection form is the more practical question.

When should I see a doctor?

Most side effects of the Wegovy pill settle as the body adjusts to each new dose. About three-quarters of people on the pill in the OASIS 4 trial reported side effects, including nausea, diarrhoea, and constipation. Around four in ten on placebo reported similar effects. Most were mild to moderate and passed within a few weeks.

Our clinical team can help with mild side effects and dose questions if you are using the Wegovy pill through us. Reach out if you have mild but ongoing nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea, and you can still keep fluids down. The same applies if you are unsure about stepping up to the next dose, or if reflux and appetite changes are bothering you. The same applies if your weight has not changed after three months at the full 25mg dose.

Some symptoms need same-day attention from your GP or NHS 111:

  • a lump in the neck, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe pain in the upper right side of your tummy (possible gallbladder problem)
  • vomiting that stops you from keeping fluids down
  • symptoms of low blood sugar if you are also on insulin, such as sweating, shakiness, confusion, or feeling faint
  • Changes to your vision, including blurring or loss of vision upon waking up. This may be a sign of a medical condition called Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION).

Call 999 or go to A&E if you notice severe upper stomach pain spreading to your back, swelling of the face or throat with difficulty breathing, signs of severe dehydration, or thoughts of self-harm. Stop taking Wegovy straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Wegovy pill really work?

Yes. In the OASIS 4 clinical trial, adults on the 25mg Wegovy pill lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks. About three in ten lost 20% or more. The FDA approved it for weight loss in December 2025 based on the same data.

What is the Wegovy pill success rate?

The Wegovy pill success rate depends on how you define success. Roughly three-quarters of people in OASIS 4 lost at least 5% of their body weight. That is the point where blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol typically begin to improve. About three in ten lost 20% or more.

How effective is the Wegovy pill for weight loss?

Average weight loss was 13.6% over 64 weeks, roughly 14kg for someone starting at 100kg. How effective the Wegovy pill is for weight loss depends on two things: how closely you follow the fasting rules, and whether you reach the full 25mg dose.

Key takeaways

  • Average weight loss with the 25mg Wegovy pill in OASIS 4 was 13.6% over 64 weeks, versus 2.2% on placebo
  • The gap between the pill and the 2.4mg weekly injection is just 1.3 percentage points. The newer 7.2mg injection widens that difference.
  • Getting the fasting routine wrong is the most common reason people lose less weight than expected.
  • Not everyone reaches the full 25mg dose – nausea during the early increases can limit how far some people go.
  • The Wegovy pill is not yet approved in the UK. The MHRA is expected to do so by late 2026.
