    Overview

    What is Genital Herpes

    Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STI) caused by the herpes simplex virus. Once you have contracted the virus, it will be present in your body for the rest of your life, however, this does not mean you will always have symptoms. Some people may never display symptoms, and may not be aware they are carriers. It's important to test for STI's if you have had unprotected sex.

    Treatments

    Aciclovir, Famciclovir or Valaciclovir

    Dosing

    Outbreak: One tablet two to three times a day for five days

    Suppression: One tablet twice daily for three months

    Effectiveness

    Taking early is important. When taken within five days of the start of an outbreak, antivirals can shorten your outbreak by up to two days or prevent one altogether. They should also make symptoms less severe.

    What causes Genital Herpes?

    Genital herpes is caused when someone contracts the herpes virus usually via sexual contact with a carrier of the virus herpes simplex.

    This may be via

    • unprotected sex
    • genital contact
    • oral sex

     

    Treatments

    How do you treat Genital Herpes?

    Antivirals medications are required to treat outbreaks of genital herpes. It should be noted, that the virus will never go away completely however.

    Treatment will settle any outbreaks of the virus. Treatments include

    • Aciclovir
    • Vaciclovir
    • Famciclovir

     

    Symptoms

    What are the symptoms of Genital Herpes?

    The most commonly presented symptoms of genital herpes are painful blisters and sores which often break out around your genitals, buttocks and thighs. Flu-like symptoms of fever, fatigue and swollen lymph nodes are also a common presenting symptom of genital herpes.

    Other symptoms may include;

    • Itching or tingling around your genital and / or anal region
    • Headaches
    • Pain on urination
    • Backaches

      You can use a local anaesthetic gel to help deal with painful outbreaks of genital herpes.

      This would usually be used in conjunction with an antiviral medication.
