What is Dalacin Cream?
Dalacin cream is a prescription-only vaginal cream used to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV). BV an infection of the vagina caused by changes in the natural balance of the bacteria in the area. This creates an overgrowth of certain bacteria (like Gardnerella vaginalis) which can lead to symptoms of BV. The active ingredient in Dalacin is 2% clindamycin phosphate. Clindamycin is an antibiotic, which works to kill off the bacteria which causes this infection.
There is also a version of Dalacin called Dalacin T which contains 1% clindamycin although this medicine is only used for acne spots. Ensure you only use Dalacin C (cream) for BV.
How does Dalacin work?
The antibiotic in Dalacin cream works by stopping this overgrowth of bacteria. This helps the body to restore the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina and stop the symptoms of BV.
50% of women with BV will not have any symptoms. The most common symptom is an unusual vaginal discharge that has a strong fishy smell, most often after sexual intercourse. The discharge may be white or grey and thin and watery. Soreness and itching symptoms are not usually associated with BV.
Dalacin cream only treats BV and is not effective against other vaginal infections like other bacterial infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or vaginal thrush.
Dose
Insert the cream into the vagina at night as directed for 3 to 7 days. The cream comes with an applicator. The dose is one applicator full (about 5 grams of cream). This dose should be inserted into the vagina using the applicator.
The patient information leaflet contains the following information:
- Wash your hands and remove the cap from the tube.
- Screw a disposable applicator onto the tube where the cap has been removed.
- Holding the tube from the bottom, squeeze gently and force the cream into the applicator. The applicator is full when the plunger does not move further.
- Unscrew the applicator and replace the cap on the tube.
- Lie on your back, hold the applicator firmly, and insert gently into the vagina as far as possible without causing discomfort. Still holding the barrel, slowly push the plunger until it stops and all the cream has been expelled.
The applicator should be disposed of in a general waste bin rather than a toilet.
Your symptoms should begin to improve quickly and fully resolve within 3-7 days. Even if your symptoms begin to resolve before 3 days, ensure you finish a minimum of a 3-day course to prevent BV returning. If you have any symptoms remaining after 7 days it is important that you contact your doctor about other treatments or testing for confirmation of BV.
