What is Fucidin cream?
Fucidin cream and Fucidin ointment are topical treatments used to treat bacterial skin infections. Examples of bacterial skin infections include infected dermatitis and eczema, impetigo, and infected cuts and grazes. It is usually prescribed as a 7 to 10 day course to clear up the infection.
It contains the active ingredient fusidic acid and is available as the brand name Fucidin.
How does Fucidin work?
Fusidic acid is an antibiotic that works by stopping the bacteria that causes infections. It does this by preventing the bacteria's ability to multiply, effectively stopping the spread of the infection. This helps to treat the skin infection and allows the skin to heal.
Fusidic acid only works against bacteria. It is not effective against fungal or viral skin infections. Ringworm and athlete’s foot are both examples of fungal infections that can be treated with antifungals like Daktarin cream. Shingles and cold sores are examples of viral infections.
Fucidin cream uses
Fucidin cream is used for a number of bacterial infections including:
- Impetigo (school sores) - A crusty, weeping and swollen patch of skin which is highly contagious.
- Infected dermatitis and eczema - Scratching from these conditions can cause the skin to become broken result in a skin infection.
- General infections from cuts and grazes
Fucidin cream is generally effective against these types of infections if used correctly.
How to use Fucidin cream
You should use Fucidin exactly as your doctor has told you to. Usually, it is applied three or four times a day to the infected areas. Make sure you use Fucidin cream for the full prescribed course, even if the infection seems to have improved. This is to prevent the infection from coming back if not fully cleared if treatment is stopped early.
Before first applying the cream or ointment, remove the cap and check the seal isn’t broken. To break the seal, push the spike in the cap through it.
Wash your hands before applying the treatment and wash them afterwards (unless you’re treating your hands). A thin layer of cream or ointment should be applied to the affected area of the skin and gently rubbed in. Do not cover the skin with dressings or bandages unless your doctor has advised you to do so. Be careful to avoid contact with the eyes or lips. If accidental contact occurs, wash it out with cold water right away. If irritation persists, consult your doctor.
Fucidin alternatives
Fucidin is a common course of treatment for certain skin infections. Doctors may also prescribe a combination of fusidic acid and a steroid ingredient. These may be more suitable for people with inflammatory skin infections, such as infected eczema.
Fucidin H cream contains fusidic acid and the steroid hydrocortisone. Fucibet cream contains fusidic acid and the steroid betamethasone.
Non-prescription treatments for eczema and dermatitis include moisturisers, bath and shower gels, and antihistamine tablets to help with itching.

FAQ
What is eczema?
Eczema is a long term, inflammatory skin condition which usually has periods when it flares and periods when it clears. It can cause itchy and dry skin and is commonly found on the back of the knees, on the hands, and the inside of the elbows.
What does eczema look like?
In eczema, the skin is often inflamed and can be weepy. In lighter skin, eczema might become red. In darker skin, the inflamed skin might be grey, dark brown, or purple. This page shows several photos of eczema in people of different ages.
How do you get eczema?
There is no single cause of eczema. It is thought to involve a combination of factors like genes, environmental factors, and the immune system.
People with a family history of eczema, hayfever, and/or asthma may be more likely to get eczema. There are also trigger factors that may cause eczema flares in some people. Examples of these are certain soaps, certain fabrics, pet fur, and pollen.
Can stress cause eczema?
Stress is thought to be one trigger factor that can exacerbate eczema or cause flares. Eczema can also cause people to feel stressed about their symptoms.
Can you buy steroid creams over the counter?
Some steroid creams can be bought over the counter at pharmacies. This includes Hydrocortisone 1% and Eumovate 0.05% but they can only be purchased after receiving medical advice from a pharmacist. Other corticosteroid creams are prescription-only medicines.
You can order prescription eczema creams (UK) from our online doctor service. We ask that you complete an online medical questionnaire to enable our doctors to check that it is safe to prescribe. This service is only available to patients already prescribed specific steroid creams by their GP.
