What is Elocon Scalp Lotion?

How does it work?

They do this by blocking chemicals that trigger inflammation from being released in the skin. This helps to reduce inflammation and associated symptoms.

How to use Elocon Scalp Lotion

When applying the lotion, a few drops should be applied to the affected areas of the scalp once a day. Gently massage the lotion into the treated area until it disappears. You should only use Elocon Scalp Lotion for as long as your doctor has recommended. Usually, it should only be used for a short amount of time to reduce the likelihood of side effects.

Elocon Scalp Lotion should only be used on the scalp. If you have a skin condition on other areas of your body, you should speak to your doctor for more appropriate treatments, like creams or ointments. 

You should only apply Elocon Lotion under dressings, like bandages or plasters, if your doctor has told you to do so. When the lotion is applied under dressings, too much of the medicine may go through the skin barrier. 

Side Effects

Most side effects of Elocon Scalp Lotion are rare but it may cause common side effects that are associated with topical corticosteroids in general. This includes skin dryness, burning, itching, and stinging. If you notice any unusual side effects like blurred vision or signs of a skin infection, stop using the lotion and contact your doctor.

Alternative treatments

Other prescription-only corticosteroids used for scalp problems are Betnovate Scalp Application and Betacap Scalp Application. These are similar to Elocon but contain a different steroid ingredient, betamethasone valerate. They may be suitable to use for people who find Elocon Scalp Lotion ineffective.

Other treatments are available to buy over the counter without a prescription. Examples include Capasal shampoo, Alphosyl, and Nizoral. These can be useful in the treatment of scalp conditions like dermatitis and severe dandruff.

You should not use Elocon Scalp Lotion if you have had an allergic reaction to mometasone, or any of the ingredients in Elocon Lotion, in the past. 

Using topical corticosteroids, like Elocon, for long periods of time or on large areas can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. You should only use Elocon Lotion for as long as your doctor has told you to. 

Care should be taken not to smoke or go near naked flames when using Elocon because the lotion is highly flammable. Fabrics like clothing and bedding that come into contact with the lotion may burn more easily.

Sometimes psoriasis can worsen or you can get raised bumps filled with pus under your skin with Elocon use. If you notice your scalp condition worsens, you should stop using it and contact your doctor.
