Overview

About Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is currently the most common STI in the UK and is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (the bacterial name). It is sometimes symptomless, meaning people can have the infection and not know it.

In 2012, more than 200,000 people tested positive for the infection according to NHS statistics. Of these 200,000, the vast majority were under 25 (64%).

Fortunately, you can order chlamydia treatment online, as it is easily treated with antibiotics. However, prevention is always better than cure, and use of a condom helps to prevent transmission.

Unlike genital herpes, where the virus remains with you for life, Chlamydia can be cured with antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria that cause the infection. The antibiotic is usually fully effective after one week from starting your course or taking your dose. If you are still displaying symptoms, you should refer to your GP for tests and an alternative course of antibiotics.

Once the bacterial infection has been eliminated, it should not come back unless you are reinfected. Your sexual partner should also be tested and treated to prevent this, so it's important that you notify them.

Causes

Chlamydia Causes

It is caused by the bacteria chlamydia trachomatis. It is easily transmitted, but also easily prevented. The use of a condom prevents the transmission of bacteria.

The infection is generally found in the urethra in men or the vagina in women. Less commonly, it can also be found in the throat or rectum in both men and women.

The infection is passed between sexual partners through the transfer of sexual fluids and direct genital contact. This is generally any type of sexual contact (vaginal, anal or oral sex). Pregnant women can sometimes pass the infection to their baby.

A major cause of transmission is the fact that some people do not have symptoms and therefore don’t know they are infected. As many as 50% of men are symptomless with chlamydia. An even higher percentage of women (up to 70%) have no symptoms.

This makes the use of condoms and the practice of safe sex vitally important because transmission can occur without either partner knowing. For this reason, you should have a check-up with your local sexual health clinic if you are sexually active or have had unprotected sex.

Treatments

Chlamydia Treatment

With Simple Online Pharmacy, you can order antibiotics to treat it online by filling out an online doctor assessment. Antibiotics are the treatment of choice, and with the correct course, can be very effective in eradicating the infection. Side effects include stomach pain, nausea and diarrhoea but for most people, these will be mild.

The two antibiotics most commonly used to treat the infection are Azithromycin and Doxycycline.

Azithromycin is available as a 250mg tablet. You will receive 4 x 250mg tablets, which are to be taken as a single dose (i.e all four tablets at once). This is your single dose chlamydia treatment.

Doxycycline is available as a 100mg tablet. It’s used by taking one tablet twice daily for 7 days.

With chlamydia treatments, it’s important that you do not have sex until 7 days after Azithromycin treatment or until you have finished the full 7-day course with Doxycycline. This is to ensure the infection is killed and you won’t accidentally spread the infection.

If you are diagnosed with chlamydia, or if your partner has been diagnosed, it is vital that both of you are treated. So if you would prefer to get treatment discreetly, you can order your chlamydia treatment online.

Symptoms

What are the symptoms of Chlamydia?

The symptoms in men include discharge from the penis, a burning sensation when peeing, and swelling of the scrotum. Left untreated men may experience long term inflammation in the tube that carries sperm from the testicles to the penis, known as epididymitis.

The symptoms found in women include a burning sensation when peeing, bleeding between periods, and abnormal vaginal discharge. Long term chlamydial infections can if left untreated cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and affect fertility.
