What is Loceryl Nail Lacquer?
Loceryl Nail Lacquer is used to treat fungal nail infections. It is a topical antifungal treatment that helps to clear the infection from the nails. It is applied to the affected nails once or twice a week. Treatment can take around 6 months for fingernails and 9-12 months for toenails.
It contains the active ingredient amorolfine. A generic version of amorolfine can also be prescribed.
How does it work?
Fungal nail infections are caused by a fungal infection affecting the nail or nail bed. It can cause the nail to thicken or change shape and colour. Both toenails and fingernails can be affected, although toenails are more commonly affected.
Loceryl contains the antifungal ingredient amorolfine. Amorolfine works by killing the fungal cells causing the infection, which helps to clear the infection. It can take several months to completely clear the nail and for healthy nail to regrow.
How to use Loceryl
You should use it exactly as your doctor has told you to. It is usually applied once or twice a week for several months until the infection has cleared.
Before applying the nail lacquer for the first time, you should file down the infected areas of the nail as much as possible. You can file the nail before each application if necessary, but make sure not to use the same nail file on healthy nails because you can spread the infection. After filing, clean the nail(s) with the swabs provided.
You can then dip the applicator into the bottle of lacquer and apply it evenly over the surface of the nail(s). Clean the applicator with the swabs provided after each use.
You should let the lacquer dry for around 3 minutes. You can apply cosmetic nail varnish to the nail but you should wait at least 10 minutes before doing so. You should not use artificial nails during treatment with Loceryl.
It is important to continue using this treatment until the infection has cleared and healthy nails have regrown.
Alternative treatments
The cheaper, generic version of Loceryl can be used as an alternative. Amorolfine contains the same active ingredient, the same strength and works in the same way as Loceryl.
A different topical antifungal is also available on prescription. Trosyl Nail Solution contains a different antifungal ingredient called tioconazole. This is applied more often than Loceryl and should be applied to the affected nail(s) every 12 hours. It is generally used for 6 months but sometimes can be used for up to 12 months.
If you find topical treatments are not effective, your doctor may prescribe a medicine called terbinafine. Terbinafine is an oral antifungal tablet that is taken every day. The duration of treatment is usually 6 weeks to 3 months for fingernails and 3 to 6 months for toenails.
