Overview

What is nausea?

Nausea is the sensation of feeling sick and feeling like you’re going to vomit. Nausea and vomiting are very common symptoms that can be caused by many medical conditions.

There are some tips you can follow to help with nausea. For example, getting fresh air, having regular sips of a cold drink, eating smaller and more frequent meals, and drinking peppermint or ginger tea. Other things might worsen nausea such as eating large meals, lying down after eating, eating strong-smelling food, and eating too quickly.

Nausea can be short-lived or long-lasting, depending on the cause. For some people, nausea can be accompanied by other symptoms such as lightheadedness, dizziness, and abdominal pain.

Causes

What causes nausea?

Nausea is very common and has many possible causes. Common causes include food poisoning, migraine, vertigo, motion sickness, morning sickness in pregnancy, anxiety, and acid reflux. With these conditions, some people may only experience nausea and others will experience nausea and vomiting, amongst other symptoms.

Other causes include medicines and substances like alcohol. Cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy also commonly cause nausea and vomiting.

If you’re often nauseous or are nauseous for longer than a few days, you should speak to your GP for advice. Your GP can assess you and try to find out the cause of your nausea. Sometimes, treating the underlying cause will improve your nausea without anti-sickness medicines.

Treatments

Nausea treatments

Treatments for nausea and vomiting are called antiemetics. There are several antiemetics that are effective at preventing or treating nausea.

One antiemetic over the counter in the UK is buccal prochlorperazine 3mg tablets. It’s available under the brand name Buccastem M. These are tablets that are placed between the upper lip and gum to dissolve. They can be sold to treat nausea and vomiting in migraines.

A different anti-sickness tablet over the counter is cyclizine 50mg. This can be used to treat nausea caused by many reasons such as motion sickness or radiotherapy. Pepto Bismol is another over the counter treatment used for nausea, taken in liquid form. This contains the active ingredient bismuth subsalicylate.

Other antiemetics are only available on prescription from a doctor or healthcare professional. This includes tablets such as metoclopramide, prochlorperazine (5mg), promethazine, cinnarizine, ondansetron, and domperidone.

Anti-sickness tablets work to control nausea and vomiting in different ways. Many of them work by blocking nausea messages from being sent to a part of the brain called the ‘vomiting centre’. By blocking these messages, the medicine helps to relieve nausea and the feeling of an upset stomach.

Different nausea tablets will have different side effects but many can make you feel drowsy or sleepy. You should read the patient information leaflet of any medicine before taking it. If a medicine makes you feel drowsy, you should not drive or operate tools or machinery. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for further advice on side effects.
