What is Dovobet?

Dovobet is a medication used to treat psoriasis (psoriasis vulgaris). It’s available as a gel, most often prescribed for scalp psoriasis. There is currently no Dovobet cream formulation on the market.

Dovobet contains two active ingredients: calcipotriol and betamethasone dipropionate. Each gram of gel contains calcipotriol 50 micrograms and 0.5 mg of betamethasone. Calcipotriol is known as a vitamin D analogue and betamethasone is a corticosteroid.

How does Dovobet work?

Psoriasis is caused by an increased production of skin cells. This results in a build-up of skin cells and creates the patches and other symptoms seen in psoriasis.

Calcipotriol works by slowing the production of skin cells and bringing the rate of skin cell growth back to normal. Betamethasone works by reducing inflammation, which helps to improve symptoms such as itching and soreness.

Duration of treatment

You should use this medicine for the duration that your doctor has recommended. The usual treatment period is a maximum of 4 weeks, but your doctor may decide on a different treatment period. If you feel you need to continue treatment for longer than 4 weeks, you should have a review with your doctor to discuss this first.

Dovobet alternatives

Several different treatments can be used to improve psoriasis. Topical treatments include emollients that moisturise the skin and help to reduce itching and scaling. Examples of effective emollients include Dermol Lotion, Hydromol Shower Emollient, Zerobase, Hydromol Cream, and Oilatum Emollient.

Other topical treatments include steroid creams and ointments. Several steroid creams can be prescribed and they range from mild to very potent. Examples of topical steroids include Eumovate, Betnovate and Hydrocortisone

As well as calcipotriol, other vitamin D analogues include calcitriol and tacalcitol. You can see more information on the topical treatments of psoriasis in this leaflet from the British Association of Dermatologists.

Other psoriasis treatments include phototherapy and oral treatments such as methotrexate and ciclosporin.
