What is Adcal D3?

Adcal D3 is a medication that contains calcium and vitamin D3. The active ingredients are calcium carbonate and vitamin D3 (colecalciferol). Three types of Adcal D3 are available: chewable tablets, caplets, and effervescent tablets (Adcal D3 dissolve).

The chewable tablets and effervescent tablets are the same strength and contain 1500mg of calcium carbonate and 400units (10micrograms) of colecalciferol. The caplets are half the strength and contain 750mg of calcium carbonate and 200units (5micrograms) of colecalciferol.

Adcal can be used to treat people with low calcium and vitamin D levels for various reasons. It can also be prescribed to people with bone problems like osteoporosis. By raising calcium and vitamin D levels, it can help prevent bone damage and fractures in people with osteoporosis.

How does it work?

Calcium and vitamin D are essential for healthy bones, teeth, and muscles. Our bodies get calcium from foods in our diet like dairy and green leafy vegetables. Our bodies create vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin when we’re outdoors, although some foods also contain vitamin D.

Some people may not get enough sunlight, especially in the winter in the UK. Other people may not get enough calcium or vitamin D from their diet. This can lead to a lack of vitamin D and calcium, causing deficiencies. Eventually, this can lead to bone pain, osteoporosis and other conditions. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to rickets in children.

Adcal and similar supplements provide a source of calcium and vitamin D for the body. This helps to increase levels in the body and improve conditions caused or worsened by the deficiency, like osteoporosis.

Who needs Adcal D3?

Certain people are at a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency and therefore, the problems associated with this deficiency. At-risk people include:

  • Frail or housebound people who aren’t outdoors in sunlight enough
  • People who wear clothes that cover up their skin when outdoors
  • People with dark skin
  • People in a care home

It's difficult for people to get enough vitamin D from food alone and many people will not get enough sunlight in the winter in the UK. Public Health England advice is that everyone should take a vitamin D supplement between October and early March.

Adcal D3 alternatives

There are various vitamin D products available to buy over the counter and via NHS prescriptions. Strengths of vitamin D vary from around 200IU to 4000IU. Most people are recommended to take 400IU and are unlikely to need higher strengths.

One product that contains 400IU of vitamin D is Pharma Nord Bio-Vitamin D3. An example of a product that contains 1000IU of vitamin D is Vitabiotics Ultra D3
