Keep it clean - boils are normally caused by a minor infection, particularly bacterial infections in hair follicles. To make sure your boils heals as quickly as possible, keep it clean - wash the area when bathing or showering, and clean the surrounding area with antibacterial soap if it leaks.

What are boils and carbuncles?

Boils are formed due to minor skin infections, specifically bacterial infection in hair follicles. They start as small, red patches that develop a pustule (a small sac filled with pus, the “head” of the boil). This pus is primarily made up of white blood cells, which gather to fight the infection.

A carbuncle is a collection of boils, normally forming a dome shape. These are most common on the back, thighs and the back of the neck. As carbuncles normally affect people with weaker immune systems, you may notice other symptoms, such as a temperature and feeling unwell or fatigued.

Magnesium Sulphate paste draws water from the skin’s surface through osmosis. This reduces the swelling in the boil, whilst drawing the contents towards the surface, making the boil more likely to either pop internally or to expel the pus into the paste. Either way, this allows the healing process to begin.

What if Care Magnesium Sulphate Paste doesn’t work?

Should I pop my boils?

Apply liberally to the affected area with a clean finger, enough to completely cover the boil or carbuncle. 

Cover with a clean dressing.

Do not use this product if you are allergic to magnesium sulphate, phenol, or any of the other ingredients listed.

If you are using any other medications, particularly any ointments or creams for your skin, speak to your doctor before using this medication.
