Practical Tips

Boils and carbuncles can be an annoyance to deal with, but in some cases can lead to more serious infections. Follow these simple tips to help keep boils under control;

Keep it clean - boils are normally caused by a minor infection, particularly bacterial infections in hair follicles. To make sure your boils heals as quickly as possible, keep it clean - wash the area when bathing or showering, and clean the surrounding area with antibacterial soap if it leaks.
Keep it covered - a dressing or even a plaster can prevent further irritation, which can cause the infection to worsen. Ensure any coverings used are clean and sterile, to prevent the infection from getting worse. THis includes changing them every few hours, and after cleaning.
Draw it out - treatments such as Magnesium Sulphate Paste or even a towel soaked in hot water can reduce swelling around the boil, and draw the contents of the boil to the surface to make it easier for your body to expel.
Don’t pick it - while it may be tempting to try and clear a boil out yourself, this can cause damage to the skin, and possibly spread the infection to other areas. Use the above techniques, and if the boil doesn’t disappear, or the pain becomes too much to handle, speak to your doctor about lancing the boil rather than trying it yourself.

FAQ

What are boils and carbuncles?

Boils are formed due to minor skin infections, specifically bacterial infection in hair follicles. They start as small, red patches that develop a pustule (a small sac filled with pus, the “head” of the boil). This pus is primarily made up of white blood cells, which gather to fight the infection.

They can be difficult to tell apart from spots when they start, but boils normally end up larger and more painful than spots. Boils can develop anywhere on the body, though they are most common on areas with body hair, such as the thighs, face or neck. Most boils will burst on their own after 2 or 3 days, draining and healing over.

A carbuncle is a collection of boils, normally forming a dome shape. These are most common on the back, thighs and the back of the neck. As carbuncles normally affect people with weaker immune systems, you may notice other symptoms, such as a temperature and feeling unwell or fatigued.

How does Care Magnesium Sulphate Paste work?

Magnesium Sulphate paste draws water from the skin’s surface through osmosis. This reduces the swelling in the boil, whilst drawing the contents towards the surface, making the boil more likely to either pop internally or to expel the pus into the paste. Either way, this allows the healing process to begin.

What if Care Magnesium Sulphate Paste doesn’t work?

If you have been using Care Magnesium Sulphate Paste for a few days and have seen no improvement to your skin condition, stop using this product and speak to your doctor or dermatologist. This may mean that you do not have a boil or carbuncle, and may have another, more serious skin condition.

It may also simply be that the boil is larger than normal, and may require more specialised tools to extract. Make an appointment as soon as possible to speak to a medical professional if you have any concerns about your skin condition.

Should I pop my boils?

Popping a boil on your own can result in damage to your skin, which can make the underlying infection worse, or spread the infection across your skin or to other areas. Most boils should be left to heal on their own; however, if they are too painful to leave, you can speak to your doctor or dermatologist about having the boil lanced. This will be done with sterile tools and the expertise to ensure there is no damage done, or any chance to spread the infection.
