What is Surgical Spirit?

Surgical spirit is an alcohol-based treatment designed to harden the skin, especially on the feet and to help prevent bedsores.

Surgical spirit uses methyl salicylate to expand the blood vessels in skin, which will harden over time. This helps to make skin harder and more resistant to wear and tear, such as bed sores.

Please note that surgical spirit uses denatured alcohol, which can be poisonous when consumed. Make sure to use this medication safely.

Is surgical spirit the same as rubbing alcohol?

Yes. Most commonly, surgical spirit is the term used in the UK, while rubbing alcohol is used in the United States. 

However, there can be differences in purity; US definitions require 70% denatured alcohol, while the UK requires 95% denatured alcohol to qualify. There can also be differences in additives and other ingredients. Always read the label before using any product.

Can I use surgical spirit for piercings?

No. Surgical spirit may be too harsh, especially for a new body piercing. It is recommended to use a warm saline solution (salt water) to soak your piercing. Once your piercing is healed, you can clean your piercing when you bathe or shower. 

Surgical Spirit Side Effects

As with all medications, some users may experience side effects when using Surgical Spirit - however, most will not.

Some patients have reported irritation of the skin around the treatment area. This is an expected effect, and isn’t considered serious. If it becomes serious, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Accidental swallowing may cause serious side effects which may not be obvious straight away. Seek urgent medical care if swallowed.

How To Use Surgical Spirit 

Add a few drops of spirit to a cotton wool bud and apply to the affected area as required.

Do not apply to broken skin, including existing bed sores.

Warnings for use of Surgical Spirit 

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.

Speak to your doctor before using this medication if you are currently taking warfarin, or any anticoagulant medications. 

Speak to your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This medication should only be used during pregnancy with a doctor’s approval.

This medicine contains 90.25% v/v ethanol in each application. It may cause burning sensation on damaged skin.

For external use only. This product is not safe to drink. If ingested, seek urgent medical care.

Do not store above 25C. This product is flammable - keep away from naked flames and heat sources.

Surgical Spirit Ingredients

Active Ingredient - methyl salicylate 0.5% v/v. 

Other Ingredients - industrial methylated spirit 95% v/v, diethyl phthalate and virgin castor oil.
